'Comas' _a rare gig at Hammersmith

'Comas' _a rare gig at Hammersmith

_Tonight _ The Irish Centre, Hammersmith, London W6 _ Tonight _

Support : J. Owen Williams

. . . fellow 'musicial brother in arms' and fiddle / bodhran head, Aidan Burke (Sligo / London) is over from Belguim with his tidy trad. outfit. These energy-driven heads comprise: flute / whistle / piper Sylvian Barou (Brittany); guitar Philip Masure (Belguim), and bodhran / percussion Jackie Moran (USA).

Speaking as a player, Philip's command of the guitar is taken to the very knife-edge of trad backing _my ears await the blistering . . .

Aidan's first cousin, Kevin, needs no introduction on this site, and as a masterfull exponant of the tradition is a fairly tough one to follow. That said, Aidan's debut 'Feel the Bow' (launched this year at Hammersmith) is a great first album _Jackie McCauley says so too.
Mixing a fresh slant on trad tunes with a load of originals; my favourite being 'On the floor' which starts (as the name suggests) adruptly on the fourth beat of the bar.

Tonight's support is the London-based singer / songwriter J. Owen Williams (Limerick), a sensitive writer and performer who knows his craft; my favourite being his unashamed 'I'm no angel' _it's just waiting to be a hit somewhere in some chart . . .

I've seen Comas a couple of times, they're based here in Belgium.I've known Philip Masure for twenty years, and he's the best dadgad player on the planet. Not to be missed,if you can get to the concert you won't be dissapointed.

Re: 'Comas' _a rare gig at Hammersmith

well, they played a gig last night here in belgium (antwerp) at a small folkclub.
this international band (Be/Ire/Fr/USA) is about the most powerfull i've seen/heard in, the last couple of years. if you can, you must go see them.
sylvain, former pupil of J-M Veillon, is just amazing on flutes, aidin keeps the family line going, jacky moran is all but m.r.n on perc. and philip, well, that's philip.
on december 11th there's a workshop at dranouter (B) with the band, yipee ...

Re: 'Comas' comment

sorry, only four months late 'cunnia' _not too bad for me . . .

it was a great little gig for me, i know aidan well so i understood the directional input

a brilliently crisp, aggressive start gave way to more relaxed delivery of tunes (with mad moments) and mad choices which demanded your interest all the way _i was hooked

philip was great but not on the form committed to aidan's cd (fare play to him) to which i still say ''what the **** is that DADGAD player doing? _and whatever it is, it's more than i can fathom, and i hate this tuning. philip, you're there . . .

aidan, keep plugging away, and i'll notify the yellow board . . .

god love ye

Re: 'Comas' comment

. . . by the way, 'j owen' couldn't make it that night, so i covered it (at short notice) backing london-based 'brendan mac'cauley' (belfast) on pipes, flute & whistle _also flute maker and piano tuner
