Was anyone at the festival this year? How was it? who was the best performers etc? Didn't make it along this year but i'm hearing alot of different responses, such as the festival was alot quieter this year but friday's gig was amazing. i dont know, but what did you lot think?
Teada played Camden last year. They are indeed a good band, but I think they are less than the sum of their parts. Oisin MacDiarmada is a great fiddler and I don't think the band shows up the extent of his talents - and the same for John Blake on flute.
I loved the band cushtie that supported paddy keenan they were amazing featuring Mairead McManus, Katie Boyle, Damian Mullane, Tim Edey and Roisin Chambers what an amazing combination. more of them please. All amazing musicians individually but just as amazing when they come together.
Although I'd have liked to have gone to more events the only one I could manage was the album launch of Helen Roche, and of Beneche. Helen, our own Helen, a member of this website, was absolutely breathtaking, and I so hope she gets many gigs and album sales, because she really deserves it.
Beneche, a band from Glasgow, were really fantastic also. They're a great band who deserve a glowing future. Many of their tunes are their own compositions.
I bought both of their (Helen's and Beneche's) albums and have played them endlessly since. I would strongly recommend each.
Didn't hit much of the festival this year, but there was a storming session in the Golden Lion from 17:00-22:30 on Saturday. Several of the London-Irish families (Murphya?) were represented. The session only stopped because the Halloween disco had to start ... but most of the punters seemed up for more Irish music. Apparently there was a concert elsewhere in Camden at the same time
Border Collies were brilliant, regardless of whatever take one has on the music. Pure drop but disciplined & thrilling all at the same time. Paddy Keenan proved why he's a legend, the most beautiful tone I've ever heard from the pipes.
John(AKA Sean)0'Shea, veteran of "Paddy in the Smoke" playing as though 50 years had never happened on the last Sunday at the Irish Centre.
Absolutely right Orson - that session in the Golden Lion was truly storming. I particularly enjoyed the playing of the guitarist, I think from the programme to the festival she must be called Caroline Blake. OK, I admit, as well as really talented, she was beautiful. She provided a great pulse for the music, and really coaxed along those taking the first shaky steps in starting a tune with the warmth of her playing. Its the concentration, and total involvement of musicians like that that make this stuff magical for me, if I may, just this once, use that word. Does anyone know where she plays regularly or how I can find out, any recordings, anything like that? I promise no-one is going to get stalked.
I made it to the Paul McGrattan workshop. I thought he was superb - very generous with his material and a very thoughtful approach to the music. It was also particularly memorable because of one of the students - an 11 year-old named Orla who is stunningly accomplished, and apparently won the all-Ireland in her age group this year.
