Re: Sessions in Nortern Germany

Ceolas is definitely one of the most helpful....

... and important sites.

In searching ceolas I found this: http://www.folkworld.de/frog/gerpub.htm
Dagmar - maybe even your hometown is on that list.

Jeremy, your german is great - I even can hear you talk in my head!!!

Dagmar, I understand that there's a place in Hamburg called the Irish Rover where good traditional sessions take place. Aidan O'Hanlon is the "Fear a'T

Re: Sessions in Nortern Germany

Jaysus, Jeremy, is there no end to your talents? Heh. Dagmar, I hope that you struck up a conversation at the very least with the musicians in Hamburg. Most musicians at an open session (closed sessions are another thing) are very supportive of beginners -- not the least because many still consider themselves beginners. Try asking one of the whistle players for advice, if you can't think of another reason to start a conversation. It's probable that they'll ask you to play a tune with them at the speed you can manage. :) You might ask them whether they know of any slow sessions you can join on a regular basis.

Gruss aus America..

I have been twice to the Sunday session at Irish Rover.. I can tell you as a total outsider, they were more than happy to let me join in.. As an American musician, I found the music to be played at a slow to moderate pace, so someone that is quite intermediate could really get in.. I wasn't breathless and breaking a sweat like I am back home :0) One of the sessions had a whistler who really knew his stuff..

Hi cvplummer and Zina,
I am not familiar with sessions at all so I just talked to a flute-player at the Irish Rover and no, they didn

Re: Sessions in Nortern Germany

You might try talking to a whistler at the session (if you can find cvplummer's whistler who knows his stuff, that's be the best!) -- if you can't think what to say, ask after a teacher, that should keep a conversation going for quite a while.

I've been playing now about...let's see, a year and a half if you start from when I started learning actually Irish as opposed to off of paper, and I would say that I only know about half the tunes on a given night at any given session around town. Doesn't stop me from being welcome and even invited to various sessions, Dagmar. Take your whistle to the next session, and play along on a couple of tunes that you know you can keep up on!

The fact that they know all the sets in advance means that you can too -- take a tape recorder with you, and ask if you can record the session. Practise the tunes in those sets, and then show up next time all ready to play them. (Although it may be that they're just good at passing signals on the B of the prior tune.)

Have fun!

Sessions are a blast!

Re: Sessions in Nortern Germany

Viel Glueck.
