Dark Slender Boy

Dark Slender Boy

Dark Slender Boy on John Doyle's CD sung by his Dad has to be one of the most 'moving' songs ever. does anyone know of any other versions of this song? I had only heard the airs on concertinas, fiddles & pipes etc ..and does anyone have any interesting scores for this air?

I truley love this song as my grandad used to do a Mayo version on his concertina and havent heard it for at least 20 years.

Re: Dark Slender Boy

Wow! I never read the info with the CD. I just remember thinking, why does he sound so different on that song? Know I know why. It's NOT him. Thanks!

Whatever you do, do not google "dark slender boy" from your work computer.

The expression 'do not' is like a red rag to a bull to me ...
So I did.
Apparently Louisa May Alcott (Little Women) used the term.

Re: Dark Slender Boy

A google advanced search for "Dark Slender Boy" with the subset "poetry" will bring mention of Irish Poetry such as Buchaill Caol Dubh (meaning Dark Slender Boy).

Re: Dark Slender Boy

I've heard that the Dark and Slender Boy referred to is the bottle that the poet is inordinately fond of.
I think my uncle told me this. It was my grandad's favourite air.

Re: Dark Slender Boy

Miles, I have heard the same thing, that it referred to a tall glass of stout.

Re: Dark Slender Boy

Indeed!

It is a song which has nothing to do with the loss or absence of a slender dark haired boy.
It depicts a man lamenting the lack of a glass of stout, such is the poetic imagery!

I have fond memories of staying in Edinburgh with Cathal McConnell, '85/86ish I suppose, and off we went to Sandy Bell's where we went through three different settings of the tune before he proceeded to sing it in his wonderful, inimitable style!

I've not heard any other flute players know it, but have heard a few fiddlers play it.

Re: Dark Slender Boy

Hi Brian, I should have credited you with giving me that interpretation, for I seem to remember you explaining the title to me in a pub in Wiveliscome or Williton. How's things in Tassie today?

Dang! I and I thought I could encourage you all to go where I dared not. I get too many "enlarge your pen*s" emails as it is. Why they thing a woman is a good target for those emails is beyond me.

I could use a dark slender boy or two to get the day started. Oh, yeah, and a stout, too.

Re: Dark Slender Boy

I haven't heard John Doyle's version, but surely is not as breathtaking as Iarla O'Lionaird's version on 'The Seven Steps to Mercy'.

Re: Dark Slender Boy

Is that the same air, then, that Tommy Potts played on the Liffey Banks? And Willie Clancy played it too, on the pipes, of course. Hair-raisingly beautiful in both cases.

Liam O'Flynn plays it on Planxty's Live 2004 CD & DVD

Re: Dark Slender Boy

Simon Mayor plays an insrumental version on Mandolin on his CD 'New Celtic Mandolin', which is nice, but I don't know how ture it is to the original since I haven't yet heard it
