Cherish the flute lady

Cherish the flute lady

I'd like to check out how to play ITM on the "silver" (Boehm) flute, and the only person i know who does that is the flutist in Cherish The Ladies (Joannie Madden?). Just so i don't have to buy all of their CDs and try to find which one has good flute exposure, which one(s) do you recommend?

Is there another recorded Boehm flute player of ITM music that i should check out?

Thanks!

Re: Cherish the flute lady

Good Irish trad players of the Boehm flute are as rare as fairy fossils. Joannie Madden has just got to be the best going. While I always encourage Boehmites to learn simple system for Irish (why not be able to play both systems? I wish I could), Joannie's playing makes me doubt my own advice. Get the recording of the late Paddy Carty, an excellent Galway fluter, who used a wooden Radcliffe flute which, as far as I know, was fully-keyed. When would-be flute players had to rely on antique models, I did see one or two odd combos of simple and Boehm. Good luck to ye!

Re: Cherish the flute lady

Joannie has three solo CD's. Two are entirely Irish Whistle (Songs of the Irish Whistle 1 & 2). Her first solo CD was called A Whistle on the Wind and she does play flute on it. You can look it up on Amazon.com and listen to samples of all the tracks to get an idea if it's what you're looking for. Hope this helps.

Re: Cherish the flute lady

Joannie does a good job on the Boehm Flute, I asked her about the pro's & con's & she said it's good for any key & she's used to it. Maureen (Doherty)Mackin also uses a Boehm they both have tracks on the first self titled Cherish the Ladies album. This album isn't a typical band album, it's candid snapshots of good traditional music on various instruments. I would suggest it over any other album to someone new to ITM. (Not that your new Glauber)

I personally have no problem with someone playing a ITM on a boehm, however I personally have a problem playing ITM on a boehm. The fingerings & ornaments are all different. If you can do it god bless.

Re: Cherish the flute lady

I'm new, Brad.

Thanks, i'll check it out. In the festival i just went to, in the workshops, there were a few children playing Boehm, and one of them did a good job of playing tunes in it. Unfortunately, i lost track of her and wasn't able to ask how she learned.

There was also an Ed Reavey booth where they played videos all the time, and one of the videos had a Boehm player. The guy was doing rolls, for example, and they sounded more like fiddle rolls than typical flute rolls.

Paddy Carty played his Radcliffe, but the fingering there is more like a trad flute than a Boehm, and he didn't sound much different from trad flute players, except stylistically.
