Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Some of you may know that Michael Flatley is, in fact, a damn good flute player. He was a student of Seamus Tansey and won at least one all Ireland. He came out with an album a number of years ago that is supposedly rather excellent but near impossible to find.

Fear not, Flatley is near releasing a new flute album which features probably the most obnoxious flute recording I've ever heard. It's well worth a listen.

Truly one of the worst accompaniements to good playing since the days of Michael Coleman and the #$*#(% piano player.

Enjoy,
Chris

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

He didn't have to do anything. The guy has countless millions of dollars. He could produce the album any way he wants, with anyone accompanying him, etc. This is just a case of horrendously bad taste..
Oh, and do make sure to check out the picture comparison.

The second pic makes me wonder if he's been doing over-nighters at Never Never Land with the King of Pop.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Ok so I used to be a big fan of Michael Flatley but lost interest after he stopped dancing. And I have his first flute cd and that one is good cause its really traditional, but this, omg its horrid. It sord of reminds me of Reggae mixed with Irish, and it just does not work.

I guess all that money went right to his head and made him think he can get away with anything...even the idea of mixing Reggae accompaniment to and Irish tune. Interesting none the less tho..lol

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Let's face it, he didn't make this for our benefit. I don't suppose he gives a toss what we think. I think we're agreed that it's not really to our collective taste. I bet his name will sell a fair few copies of it though. I wonder what Tansey thinks of it, since he's a bit of a purist (in his own way, if that makes sense - read the chapter in Colin Irwin's book about meeting Tansey.)

Long lost twins, indeed. Very funny.

The recording, on the other hand, I could only endure for slightly under 60 seconds. Why do so many wealthy people have such obscene taste?

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

I try not to be racist, but this represents all that I feel about populist American bad taste! I am also a student of human motivation, and I know nothing of Flatley beyond exceptional dancing legs, a decent flute, and a largish ego. None of these gives me any clue about why he's done it.

Just seen the photos! Even more mystified and revolted.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Jim, interesting point about Lindeert de Jonge's playing of Bach. When I play Bach, or other composer of that period, on the cello now I feel I naturally want to put in the occasional roll or other ornament which my old cello teacher would have been surprised to hear (and probably delighted as well, since he had another life as a jazz musician). Of course, in an orchestra I mustn't do that, because of the orchestral discipline of everyone playing from the score, but the unaccompanied stuff gives far more scope for individual interpretation.

Having said that, Bach and Handel, to mention but two composers of that era, didn't put much in the way of ornaments or phrasing in their scores (what we see now are the efforts of modern editors), not much more than broad indications of speed or whether something is to be played loud or soft. The musicians of the day would have put in the ornamentation themselves, as part of the culture. I suspect that playing Irish trad music today gives an insight into that 17/18th century tradition, and it shouldn't be too surprising that there is a cross-over effect.

Legal question. Could there be a legal dispute (entertaining, perhaps!) between Carey and Flatley over those photos - the resemblance is startling.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

I'd just like to point out that the new CD will be a 2-CD set, with 1 CD with contemporary music, and 1 with traditional. I know which one I'm hoping that track's from. There is also contact info on the website, for fans, press, etc.

Michael Flatley Plays With Himself

2 CDs worth?! - I wonder which sampler and sequencer he used, or was it just one of those new rhythm boxes from the likes of Edirol/Roland? - - - 'Riverdance' and 'Lord of the Dance' did more than just cripple him physically...

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Hard to imagine Flatley winning an All-Ireland for flute. I saw him perform as a flute player before Riverdance became a full-length show. He attempted The Mason's Apron ala Matt Molloy, and it sounded like falling down stairs to me. At the time, I had not heard of him, and so had no preconceived notions about him, but that concert was a turkey.

Re: Quite possibly the most "obnoxious flute recording" ever, apart from some of Seamus Egans

Michael Flatley is actualy a phenomenal trad flute player and plays in a few sessions whenever he is staying down in Cork.

i think the biggest Egoist tw4t is Seamus Egan ..completely ruined SOLAS and his solo recordings are well and truly up his precocious 4rse. Alright he can play a flute but is a complete premadonna ..have you heard Junniper Sleeps ..Oh my god come back Davy Spillane and atlantic bridge all is forgiven ..no it isnt that realy was sh!te

Michael is a very very good flute player and it is my beleif that when he gets his dress sense back so will his production sense ...buiochas le dia.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Arsebicuit - I'll agree with you about Flatley, but if you think that about Seamus Egan, you're well named. He plays flute , whistle , banjo, mandolin, guitar & uilleann pipes and has won All-Ireland titles on 4 of them. Not bad for a "prima-donna"! Name me one other musician who has done that. Anyway, this discussion is about Michael Flatley, not Seamus Egan. Start your own thread of abuse.

Arse..........
Seamas Egan is an incredible musician.
Jealousy will get you nowhere....

I have seen him perform since early days and he shines.....
----------------------------------------------
ALL...........
As for Michael Flatley.....
He was never a brilliant dancer...

Just look at the World Champion dancers that lined up behind him...
Tracey Taaffe, Donal Conlan, Kevin McCormac, and on and on............

He just has the liathroidi to do what he does...
Winning world championships in 1975 and being the first American to do it was enough to set his enflamed ego off.......
Thus the MF (Think of your own meaning for MF)
we all know.

Arsebiscuit, we are all entitled to our own opinions but let's keep mean and negative comments about other musicians off this website. I'm guessing you are young but it's still no excuse. You should go stand in the corner for that :-)

I met Seamus Egan a few years ago and found him to be a very nice person. And I'd be thrilled to have a small fraction of his amazing talent.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Yep - I agree, it's bad form to be knocking Seamus Egan on this thread. I saw Solas perform a *free* concert in a suburban park in Philadelphia. (Free concert? overinflated ego? THose 2 don't match up in my book.)Seamus Egan played Guitar mostly. There was just one or two solo flute sets by him and they were amazing, and rightly within the tradition, unlike Flatley's offering above.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Hate to disagree, folks, but no-one is above criticism, not even the big boys / girls, and it may or may not be tinged with jealousy, sour grapes, etc...Some excellent musicians have recorded quite crappy tracks from time to time - but that doesn't stop them being excellent musicians. Don't forget for them it's showbiz, for better or worse!

Jim

# Posted on September 8th 2004 by Worldfiddler

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Disagree away, Jim. No worries. Seems to me that folks here think that although he IS a superb flute player (Mick Flatley, that is), that track just sounds sh!te.
BTW, there are, as you say, many examples of superb musicians performing with dire production/accompaniment, and it can ruin ones opinion of the player - IMHO.

# Posted on September 8th 2004 by Rudall the time

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Jimmy..
keep whay down?
Never thought I insulted anyone..

Seamas Egan is a better flute player then Flatley is a dancer...
Flatley won World Championships once in dance...
The line up behind him, as mentioned won up to 5 - 7 times they were so good...
Flatley is a business man and sells himself with his millions....
His family did that also... for him

He states he had to fight for food when he was young, but rumour states he had a brand new sports car waiting in Chigago Airport for being the first American to win first...

go figure!

Maybe he and his family fought to taste the leather on the seats!!!!

# Posted on September 9th 2004 by Eoino

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

"No one is above criticism" - agreed Jim, but that wasn't criticism, that was just nasty personal abuse. It's a huge, and in my opinion, unjustified, leap from not liking someone's music to calling them an "Egoist tw4t" and "premadonna"[sic]. That was my complaint.
As far as Flatley's concerned,I also think it might be premature to condemn an entire double CD on the basis of one track. As mentioned above, one of the 2 CDs is supposed to be "traditional", and I don't think anyone's heard anything from it yet. You can be sure that Flatley didn't record this particular track with the Irish traditional music community in mind. But if you think about it, most of the "punters" who might buy a Flatley CD will not necessarily have had much exposure to what we might think of as "the real thing". If the second "traditional" recording features more traditional music and style of playing, then he is going to be introducing a lot of people to traditional Irish flute playing for the first time, and I would say, on the basis of the recording he made in 1986[?], that he has shown himself capable of doing that to a very high standard. Time will tell. The dilemma is, do you buy a 2 CD set when there is a strong possibility you only want one?

# Posted on September 9th 2004 by Kenny

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

By having to buy 2 CDs like that, maybe Flatley's trying to expose us trad-folkies to the non-traditional stuff.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Ok... I was just watching Mad TV and they did a skit where Michael Jackson was on the Opra Winfrey show. He turned out to be an alien that announced he was taking over the world and had WMDs that would kill all humans over the age of 12. Michael Flatley showed up and they had a dance-battle. It looked like Michael won when knocked Flatley to the floor with a crotch-grab and pelvic-thrust and said, "Looks like your ass is tapped out Flatley." But The Lord of the Dance suddenly jumped up and did some thunderous tapping that forced Jackson to moonwalk out of the room in defeat. Opra Winfrey fawned all over Flatley thanking him for saving Earth as Flatley stood in his pose heaving his breasts. I knew I wasn't alone in my comparison of Flatley to Michael Jackson.

Sorry again Joyce ..I am not young either. and frequently meet lots of musicians who are nice to there audiences faces, we all have to sell our music we all have bills to pay.

if you came to one of my concerts and i took the piss out of you would you buy my overpriced CDs and pay inflated prices for gigs and to receive workshops from us ? I doubt it.

Next time you are in Donegal, get away from Gweedore and go down to the Rosses or across to Derry or Tyrone and meet the real musicians ..not the people shipped in from Dublin to make your stay pleasant and gentile.

how many of the people you recieved tuition from live in Donegal ..Harry Bradley, Mark Murphy ( or Marcus O Murchu or whatever it is nowadays) Dermie Diamonds Wife (?) ...none of them live in Donegal yet are paid to deliver the music ...hence they are nice to you ..as is Seamus Egan.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

I have met Mr. Flatley and think he is one of the nicest celebrities I've ever met. Since I don't play a musical instrument I can't comment on his technical ability but I do have an ear for music. I think he does exceptionally as a flute player and he has won at least one award for his playing ability. In his show Feet of Flames he played his own arrangement of what he calls Whispering Wind and I really liked it. It sounds like there is some jealousy in some of the comments I read here. I just like to give people credit for their ability, especially if I can't do what they are doing, play the flute I mean.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

I don't think the point is being jealous of the flute playing, I think the point is being absolutely disgusted (in a funny way) by the raggae jah love backing. Nobody here is dissing anybody, (except for arse biscuit.)

# Posted on October 17th 2004 by Kerri Brown

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Disgusted in a funny way by the raggae jah love backing huh? The last time I checked it seems that musicians and artists reserve the right individual interpretation. Michael Flatley has never been known to follow the herd so to speak. Not in his dancing and obviously in his music. If you didn't like the CD why didn't you just return it and get your money back? Sitting up on a public board on the "internet" making vulgar and crude remarks about someone like the ones I've seen about Michael Flatley is not funny. Mr. Flatley has been an inspiration to many of us just by what he has accomplished in his own life. He is also loved by children and has inspired many of the disabled ones to attempt and accomplish things that their relatives have said wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been for Michael Flatley. Not many of us can say that. We have so few heroes in the world, I just hate to see one cut to pieces like you people have been doing.

# Posted on October 18th 2004 by jetrink_2003

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

Well, you're entitled to an opinion. Personally, I appreciate being forwarned about the relative stinkiness of a recording before I splash out the dough. This being a forum where we discuss such things, I don't see how anything here is disrespectful or out of place.

Re: Quite possibly the most obnoxious flute recording ever

It's obvious our definition of crude and rude are different. Mr. Flatley's name should not even be mentioned in the same sentence with Mr. Jackson's. And what's bad music to some might be acceptable to others, including Mr. Flatley's flute playing. I might listen to what other's say but until I've heard or seen something myself I usually don't make a decision. It's called being able to make my own decisions. Enjoy your ranting and raving people, you all seem to be of the same mind.

You know, jetrink, I've been thinking about all those mean, petty things people (including myself, I'm sorry to say) have been saying about Michael, and I wanted to apologise to anyone who might have been offended. In order to make amends, I want to do something - give something back to a man who has given us so much of himself.

I'm putting together a Michael Flatley calendar, proceeds to be donated to the Michael Flatley Chest Grease and Speedos Acquisition Fund, so he can keep on giving us himself in a variety of shades and veneers.

Browse through these images at your leisure, preferably while listening to the wonderful, warm Caribbean flavored track "Barbados Blue" linked to at the top of this thread.
