Just a few that I have in my collection. Most of them aren't strictly whistle...
Mike McHale: "The Schoolmaster's House"; Miko Russell: "Russell Family from County Clare" (a Green Linnet Classic); Joanie Madden: I think any of hers have whistle; Brian Hughes: "Whistle Stop" (perhaps a bit more modern, but still nice); Larry Nugent: does flute and whistle (again, a bit more modern, but still fun), and I think you'll find some pretty traditional whistle playing on Mike Rafferty's CDs.
I'd recommend Geraldine Cotter's tin whistle tutor. I believe there's an accompanying tape [or CD ?] to go with the book. Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann also have a good tutor/tape combination. On the internet, try a search for "Brother Steve"s website - good stuff there, and you could probably contact him through this site. He is a frequent contributer. All the above recordings are good suggestions.
Tons of CDs feature whistle playing. Too many, really. I think it's nice to start with Mary Bergin's classic recording and Gavin Whelan's relatively new album. Sligo player Carmel Gunning is the best whistle player as far as I know, but I don't think her recordings are easy to find.
And many popular bands such as Lunasa and Dervish include one or two whistle players.
Familiarise yourself with well-known players or bands first.
I can really recommend the two Mary Bergin CDs and the two from Sean Ryan, both are quite pure. Laurence Nugent plays the flute and tin whistle, but there are not so many tunes for beginners. Listening to Gavin Whelan and Joanie Madden is a pleasure as it is with Carmel Gunning (I got it in Custy's Music Shop in Ennis, Co. Clare- they would send it to you)Quite colourful it the "Totally Traditional Tin Whistles" CD (OSS CD 53). There are a lot more CDs but it can confuse at the beginning. Good luck!
I like Gavin Whelan's CD, but if you were thinking of buying it, you'll need whistles in the keys of "C" and "Eb" to play along. None of the tunes were played in concert pitch.
Thanks for all you suggestions. I really appreciate them. I just recently bought Joe McKenna "Irish Low Whistle" CD. I love it -- especially track 3 "Echo's Calling". I guess he composed it himself -- it's FANNNNNTASTIC!
Thanks again

Whistle CD suggestions
I'm just learning to play whistle and I'm new to "trad". I'd like to buy some more CDs and tune books. Any recommendations? What are your favorites?

Re: Whistle CD suggestions
Mary Bergin's work is always a classic - esp. her first one.
Sean Ryan had a decent one.
The whistle by both Maloney and Potts on the Chieftans albums is pretty classic.
Paddy Keenan plays some mean low whistle on his solo work.
Any whistle by Willie Clancy is frightening. Which is a good thing.

Re: Whistle CD suggestions
Ditto the above suggestion for Laurence Nugent. Though he's not quite my style, his whistle playing is superb.
