Could anyone list the 3 cds recorded in recent times that they wouldn't want to be without and which have influenced/educated their playing? Fiddle and/or mandolin - or any traditional instruments. I want to order some new cds and look to your collective wisdom as to which ones!
Sorry, I've been too obsessed with loading my old cds on to my ipod to bother with acquiring more. It's really sick. I have more than 500 songs uploaded so far and I've used less than a 10th of the space.
I'm going to list my personal top 3 favorite new CD's that *recently* came out. I had the pleasure to hear these musicians this summer at Irish Arts Week in the Catskills, New York:
Live at Monas - Patrick Ourceau and friends
- I can't say enough good things about this CD. If you only buy one CD this year, this would be my personal recommendation!
Draiocht - Michael Rooney and June McCormack
- June is one of my favorite flute players.
Fort of Jewels - Brian McNamara
- You can't go wrong with any CD by this wonderful piper. He's another one of my favorites. He plays a lovely duet with Benedict Koehler on this CD. (2 hornpipes I'm currently working on)
Tis a parallel Universe!
Next door, in the 'What about the tons of twee, trite & sh*te IT tunes that are hammered out nightly thread' a bunch of lunatics are shrieking and spouting co-French at each other, while here in this oasis of calm, a completely different set of lunatics compile neat lists.....
Hudel, self-titled;
Kornog - can't bother to look at the CD cover, but it's really good, I've had it in my player for so long that I forgot the name of the CD;
Lunasa - good ole self-titled.
you must get if your a mandolin player/banjo gerry o connors new album @'no place like home'
its much better than his previous two.
also
oisin McDiarmada, Michael o runaigh and brian fitzgerald. very nice cd and
mick o brien and caoimhin o raghaillaigh 'kittyt lie over'
James Kelly: Irish Taditional Music. Just brilliant.
Kevin Burke: If The Cap Fits, ditto.
Liz Carroll" Lake Effect, also ditto.
I know you said 3 but, I can't live w/o Celtic Fiddle Festival (all of them). Na Connerys, Fiddlesticks, Tommy Peoples' High Part of the Road.
I'm going broke and can't be bothered.
The request was for RECENT recordings. Some of the above were recorded +20 years ago.
I'd agree with Mick O'Brien & Ciaran O'Raghallaigh, and add
"Teada's" 2nd one and either of "The Hidden Fermanaghs", with a slight preference for Vol.1., if you can't afford both.
"plucker's" request was specifically for "recorded in recent times", which I took to mean in the last year or so. I was merely responding to that request. I agree that "the tunes are timeless" as you say, but that's not what was asked for.
Favorite recent recordings (last 2 years):
Open Hearth - Mary & Andrew MacNamara
Hand Me Downs - Mary Rafferty
Fort of the Jewels - Brian McNamara
Live at Mona's - Patrick Ourceau et. al.
The Tap Room Trio
Favorite older recordings new to my collection this year:
A Touch of Clare - Kitty Hayes
Traditional Irish Music From Doolin - Terry Bingham
The Hidden Note - Jacqueline McCarthy
Alright, the first of my 3 I recently posted on Zina's quick listening check thread, but it's still in my CD player and I'm still loving it. Second one I found while on vacation in New England. Third, I actually bought in Ireland a few years ago, but have just recently rediscovered.
Eamonn Coyne: Through the Round Window
--rooted by banjo, but joined by many
other fine musicians
Claire Mann: Claire Mann
--flute, fiddle, a few songs
Frankie Gavin-- Fierce Traditional
--fiddle, some flute, and other host of
instruments
Can't really put my finger on anything specific
about these three. They just make you feel good.
1. Anglina Carberry& Martin Quinn,
2.Gerry o Connor-no place like home
3. Angelina & Peter Carberry & John Blake- memories from the holla
others are Tony Linnane & Noel Hill, Sean Tyrell Old & New.
No, i'd say ignore this guy. Definitely don't ignore 'Session A9'. Their album has easily been my favourite, ever since it came out.....
Lots of new tunes and some very clever arrangements with a hint of jazz, and overall just a superb line up of musicians...and you gotta see them live as well!
1. Under the Diamond (Kane Sisters)
2. Kitty Lie Over
3. Live at Mona's
Just got 'Under the Diamond' a week ago at their show in Doolin - it will take a few week's worth of listening to fully process everything that's happening on it - I've already learned 4 tunes from this recording - and Mick Conneely's bouzouki playing on it alone is worth the price of admission.
You're a woman after my own heart, Fi. Let's ignore the fact that this is supposed to be an Irish music site.
Three of my "top recent" CDs are--I can't be exact but
Bruce MacGregor - Loch Ness
Hom Bru -No afore time
Tonder festival 2004-Compilation album

When I saw the title of the thread I was going to put
Joe Satriani - Is There Love In Space?
Fripp & Eno - The Equatorial Stars

but when I looked at the thread I thought
Mary Bergin - An Feadog Stain

Hom Bru - No Afore Time
Kevin MacLeod - Polbain to Oranmore
A cheap CD (£2.99) by Jimmy Shand jnr that I bought at a truckstop cafe.
Most other recent purchases are too old to be called "recent" recordings. Never fail to be inspired by old Bob Wills recordings.

Re: Which are your top three recent cds?
Patsy Reid "With Complements" - The very best recording of the last year, from Scotland. (Ignore Session A9.)
Catherine & John McEvoy "The Kilmore Fancy" - this year's best, definitely.
Paul Smyth "Up and Away" - I've just got it. What a lovely flute album!
