The Ukulele in ITM

The Ukulele in ITM

Well, not exactly. We had discussions before about travel banjo solutions for hotel practice when there's no room for another carry-on bag on the plane. I found a solution that works for me...

Bought a ukulele, replaced the 4th string with a 4th classical guitar string, and tuned the thing to daeb. Fits in my mini-carry-on bag and it's perfect for learning tunes and keeping in practice. Nice and quiet so I don't get self-conscious about the neighbouring hotel room occupants.

The price, including new string: CDN$22.(About $16 US)

Not for everyone, I'm sure, but it solves my problem neatly.

Re: The Ukulele in ITM

Tunes to play on the Ukulele:

The Old Pineapple Bush
Mist Covered Volcano
Coconuts in Winter
Old Torn Mumu
The Crooked Road to Honolulu
The Flowers of Maui
The Lava is All Over
The Palm Leaf
The Kaholauwe Boys of Pleasure
The Hare in the Pineapple
Over the Lava to Maggie
The Wind that Shakes the Sugar Cane
Haste to the Luau
The Humours of Kalaupapa

(Ok... I know this is dumb, but what do you want for 1:21 am?)

Re: The Ukulele in ITM

I have seen it once. Gerry O'Beirne used to accompany Andy M.Stewart singing "The Corncrakes Amang The Whinny Knowes" playing ukelele. It worked too.

Re: The Ukulele in ITM

Yes, do a google search for "ukulele origin".

Re: The Ukulele in ITM

Jack, perhaps the medication isn't really working. Maybe you should have your condition reevaluated ;-)

Re: The Ukulele in ITM

I carry a Uke when I travel...It's a lot easier to manage than a guitar and it fits in the overhead with both concertina and a flute.

not ITM, but I cut this demo for the 3rd Wave Uke company in California four or five years ago...one take you'll forgive the mistakes.

Re: The Ukulele in ITM

I had a yard sale this weekend and sold two ukuleles to my neighbors across the street. I had the satisfaction of hearing them strum merrily on their porch last evening - it was so nice to see 'em used after sitting around my house for years (the ukes, not the neighbors). The neighbors are from Brazil, and were playing jazzy samba tunes on the ukes.

That's really cool, Bob - especially America the Beautiful. It's like a miniature Guy Van Duser.

Yikes, sorry - I plead Canadian. It sounds great in any case.

Re: The Ukulele in ITM

thye make travel guitars that are really scary looking. they're really skinny, and only a couple inches wide, less than 6 or something.

Re: The Ukulele in ITM

Ah yes, but it's the length that really matters, not the width.

Re: The Ukulele in ITM

well, one interesting option is a banjo uke. I've only really heard it in old-time music, but I don't see any reason it wouldn't sound good in Irish.
