I was wondering what everyone thought about pipemaking woods. Any personal preferences? Also, I am looking at either getting a Gallagher set or a Rogge set in snakewood, but I can't find any information about snakewood's properties as far as sound and why it's so expensive.
My set would be in lemon wood ( light color) and brass OR done in the rowsome style, dark cocobola and silver plate ( see the Seth's web page with the dark set/silver regs). Having said that I'll take what ever is out there that plays well. Seems to me there was a discussion at C&F's uilleann formum on wood in the last year or so. I would do a search there.
Post a message or search the archives for snakewood. There was a good discussion about different types of wood a while back, in between a discussion about reeds and another discussion about reeds.
Yes they do UPs out of blackwood. One of the more stable woods. And thanks you guys for the info, I've decided to go with the Gallagher set since it's more practical his being in the states and all.

one more thing; Andreas makes good pipes, but the exchange rate has got to hurt. I looked at his pricing as well a while ago.

Re: Different woods for pipes
I can highly recommend Gallagher's work - just took delivery on a nickel half set in June.
His wait list isn't that bad right now, either.
Rogge is also a very good choice for a maker. I've seen and heard his pipes and would not hesitate in ordering from him.
Only thing about buying internationally right now is that the Euro is reasonably strong against the dollar - US$1.22 gets you 1 Euro.
Bottom line is a 20% premium to buy a non-USA set of pipes.
If you do buy out of country - remember that bagpipes brought into the USA are duty free.

Re: Different woods for pipes
The set plays very well. Tone is great, drones have a nice rich resonance. I definitely got my money's worth.
