I'm gutted. My favourite band solas are finally playing in scotland, in my hometown of edinburgh, but no, happens to be on the day when I'm teaching traditional groupwork to kids in Thurso....8hours away!! sooooooooo gutted!!!
I know what you mean. Martin Hayes and Denis Cahill came down here in January, but I couldn't go. Then, about a month later, Leahy came down, and I had something that night too!! Two in a row!
Aaack..Solas and Kevin Burke AND Rasputina up near Portland at a festival and I couldn't go. Bah. I want to be retired. Isn't it a bummer? Absolute wasteland for months, then everything happens on the same weekend and you have Responsibilities and Commitments. By the way, "The Commitments" is one of my favortie movies of all time.
Solas isn't even coming anywhere NEAR upstate NY, which makes me really sad. On the flip side, Altan and Natalie MacMaster are coming to Albany in September and I hope to catch them then...and Téada (anyone know much about them?) is coming to Rochester the week before. Plus I hope to catch either Lunasa or Martin Hayes in Boston in March. But Solas is the group I REALLY want to see...so...argh?
Last year I travelled down to Melbourne (about 3500km) to catch the last week of a street festival featuring Sharron Shannon. Work commitments dictated I catch the last week rather than the first. I felt just like you do when I discovered Sharron was playing in the first week - then jetting up here to Brisbane to play one of the local theatres. D'oh!
Still, I met up with old friends and played a couple of blinding sessions, so it wasn't a total washout, but I've no idea when Ms Shannon will be back on these shores.
Unfortunately, I'll be in Denmark when Solas are in Edinburgh so I'll miss them too. I wasn't so impressed by their more recent albums but I'm sure they'll be great live.
I'm away when Lunasa are playing also but I'll be able to see them at Tønder Festival--it'll be a much better gig, anyway, and there's likely to be collaboration with Danu and other bands too.
I actually saw Solas at Tønder in 1998. Great concert. It was when Karen Casey was still in band. I've seen her quite a few times since too. Marvellous.
Crysania, in answer to you question Téada are an excellent group. Line up includes Oisin MacDiarmada, Paul Finn, Sean McElwaine, John Blake and Tristan Rosenstock. They won Best Traditional Newcomers 2003... what more can I say.
RacH - "Solas" have 1 other Scottish gig. They are playing in Stirling "Tolbooth" on the 26th. Not that far from Edinburgh. I'm coming down from Aberdeen to hear them. And to "Crysania" - "Teada" get a big thumbs-up from me. Go hear them.
Kenny man-you've made my day!!!! I'd heard a rumour they were playing the tolbooth but didn't see any details on the website. Should be able to make it. Teaching groupwork in inverness till 330pm, and going to glasgow straight after. But now I'll be able to divert and go and see solas!! Ah man!!1 I'm so happy!! Ah wow, so pleased I finally get to see em live. Not the same without karan casey or John Doyle, but hey. they're still all good! See you at the gig!
I've checked the "Tolbooth's" website, RacH. "Solas" are 26/08/2004, start 7.30pm. Tickets are £15.00, and there are no concessions. May be best to buy your ticket in advance.
