Does anyone have any information on the gathering on Skye that Alasdair Fraiser is part of that is running at the moment? Im quite interested in going next year, buti haven't managed to find out any info yet. Can anyone help?
Try www.feisaneilein.com, which runs contempraneously (good word that) with the short course music programme at Saoghal Mor Ostaig. Alistair Fraser is teaching a week's course there later this month.
That should read 'Sabhal Mor Ostaig' the Gaelic's going from bad to worse. Their website is http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk, and the music course info is under 'Cursaichean Goirid',(bet I've spelt that wrong too).
Hughie was the host of Opportunity Knocks, a talent(?) show that has a lot to answer for. Launched the career of the immortal Lena Zavarone, among others.
I went on the course last year and it was pretty good. We must have learnt at least 30 tunes. Karen Steven teaches as well and Natalie Haas does cello tuition there too. There are classes for all levels. Homework last year was to go away one night and write a tune for the next day and play it to the entire class - which was a bit hair-raising. The only down side was that the sessions were not as wild as I normally like! Quite laid back stuff most of the time, but a really good holiday to go on.
when i was there (2 or 3 years ago), the sessions were suitably wild. i guess it just depends who's on the course. i guess i was lucky in that there were a few fine players/session-heads on the course (and some of the other courses). i don't think i got to bed before 4:30am any night that i was there (and the last night was an all-nighter...). the combination with feis-an-eilean was a winning one too.
the only problem was getting up for the 9:30am starts!

Re: Skye's the limit
You don't want to know but he turned out to be Paula Yates'(late wife of Bob Geldolf) dad much to her horror.

Re: Skye's the limit
Paula Green just doesn't sound right, though.

Also hosted "The Sky's the limit". A friend of Rupert Murdoch as well, if I recall.
