ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

Firstly, a big apology: I'm very, very sorry for all the difficulty lately... slow connectivity, corrupted database (I'm especially sorry for the people who submitted the last three discussions which had to be deleted).

The finger of blame can be pointed very squarely at the current hosting company for the site: http://www.webservepro.com/

They are well and truly awful. Their service has been steadily deteriorating for some time now and it's finally reached crisis point. I'm moving The Session to a new host over the next few days.

I've been putting this off because it means disrupting the flow of the chat on the site: while the site is switching over, I'm basically going to have to disable logging on and submitting anything. Sorry :-(

Hopefully the move will go smoothly (fingers crossed) and the site will be off-limits for a period of less than 24 hours.

After that, everything should run a *lot* smoother.

As soon as I have more details, I'll post them here.

Again, sorry about the inconvenience lately.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

If you can see this, then the site has moved successfully.

Sorry about temporarily disabling logging on but otherwise anything posted during the move would have been lost.

Right. Back to the music....

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

Thanks, Jeremy! Well done!
I'd deduced over the last few weeks that not all was well with the previous server because other websites with servers in the US were working OK.
Just one thing. Today is Tuesday 2 August in the UK, but posts are already coming through dated 3 August. Is this because the new server is now the other side of the IDL?

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

Well worth the move. Was that the reason why you'd type in the address and press "enter", and still be waiting for the host to be contacted 10 mins later? Or you'd click on a tune and it would suddenly decide that it was unavailable, even though you'd been surfing round it for the last 15 mins? If so, then yes, it was incredibly irritating, and the move will definitely improve our quality of life.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

Currently (12:10pm BST 3 August), I can access the abc files and download them, so everything seems to be ok in that area.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

There still appears to be the odd "gremlin" here and there. Sometimes, if I try to enter one the more recent post, the screen "won't load".

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

Good move Jeremy, everything's working here and, no "gremlins".

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

Still having a couple of problems today but hopefully they'll be sorted out before too long.

Right now, the only remaining big issue is the site-wide search on the front page which I've had to disable for the time being.

I'm working on getting everything back to normal as quickly as possible.

Still, I think you'll agree there's been a notable increase in speed and a reduction in load time.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

Right... I believe everything is well and truly sorted out now.

The site-wide search from the front page is back up and running. Everything seems to be ticking over nicely too.

If anyone uncovers any gremlins, let me know.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

There's still one or two threads which I cannot get into unless I type the appropriate number at the end of the address. I will get a white screen with just "php" at the end of the address in the address column. If I add the relevant number eg 4169 or whatever, I can then enter the discussion.

The system will not allow me to submit a new discussion either. I'm just getting the "white screen" here. as well. I am shown as logged on.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

this is happening to me with the discussions and i'm getting the message "file not found in this location" when i try to download an abc file and open it with abc2win. very frustrating!

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: The Session server move

When you select a particular list under Shops/Lists, a couple of warnings appear ... possible file access problem?!
