Yay!! It Came!

Yay!! It Came!

My Casey Burns Folk Flute just came today! I finally have a flute! I ordered it at the beginning of the month, and it's finally here! I LOVE it so much! It has a nicer sound than any other flute or whistle that I have ever played, and it plays so easily too! I can't beleive that I can only play it an hour a day for a month, to break it in. I can't keep my hands off it! One thing that is funny about it is the finger holes. They're not in a straight line, they're crooked. I guess that makes it easier to play.

Casey very nicely sold me a slightly damaged flute for less money, so I didn't have to save so long. He said that the damage would only look bad, it wouldn't affect the playing. I was expecting something kinda ugly, but it's not! It's so beautiful! There are only tiny little flaws here and there, and I had to look closely for those.

If anyone wants a good beginner flute, get a Folk Flute!

Oh, and no fair passing us old codgers by on the way to flute mastery. Just cuz you're young, talented, and enthusiastic....

Have a blast with that flute!

Re: Yay!! It Came!

Umm, I won't be passing anyone by for a bit!

Although I am surprised with the amount of sound that I can get out of it already. I've been huffing and puffing on my new home-made PVC flute for the last week, so it's like running with brick on your feet, and suddenly being let loose! I tried playing my flute again after playing Casey's, and his is unbeleivably easier!

Also, it's more responsive than any of my whistles. Rolls are a peice of cake, and it's pretty easy now to separate the notes with cuts. In fact, I think it's only the breathing that's harder, the fingering is actually easier!

Once I break it in, I'll be playing it all day long. And all night. :-)

Hi Max, have fun!
An hour a day? How was that worked out? Like Jim, when I got mine (blackwood), I blew till I went blue - then passed out, woke up and started blowing again. And still am.

Re: Yay!! It Came!

Yes, I bought his most inexpensive model (it is my first flute), so it didn't take that long for him to get it out to me.

On a sheet that came with the flute, it said: "When new it should be played only a few minutes at a time up to a cumulative amount of an hour a day. After a month, the instrument can be played gradually more. The wood needs to get used to the cycle of wetting and drying" So that's why I'm only supposed to play an hour a day. I think I went over yesterday, though.

Jim, it's unkeyed, and it's made of Mopane.

Here's a photo (not mine, but the same kind of flute): http://www.caseyburnsflutes.com/detail_photo_ff.php

And here's a tune played on it: http://www.caseyburnsflutes.com/snd/Grey_Larsen-Torn_Jacket.mp3

Beautiful, isn't it?

Re: Yay!! It Came!

Hey, congratulations, Max! You're going to have a lot of fun for a long time with that lovely folk flute.

That break-in period was tough for me, too, but now that I'm on past two months (!) I worry less. I also felt better after giving it a good oiling.

Re: Yay!! It Came!

Does anyone know where I can get oil for it? Casey said to oil it for every ten hours I've played it, but I have no idea where to get oil.

Re: Yay!! It Came!

Jim's right - get almond oil, if not from your chemist/pharmacist/drugstore, from your local veggie/healthfood store. Just ask, they should have it. Hammy Hamilton goes on at length as to the values of the various oils. I'd've thought you might want to know some chemistry (as I do) before you pontificate (as he does) but maybe he does, but wanted to try and explain it in lay terms...maybe he should have included some diagrams of molecular formulae, that makes more sense to me. It's not difficult, anyone could understand it, even me.
