Anyone care to mention what two instruments they prefer to hear as a duo? I've been listening to Tommy Keane and Jaqueline McCarthy's cd "wind beneath the reads" and I love the way the pipes and accordian sound together. There is also a set on Kevin Burke's cd "Portland" in which Micheal O Domhnaill lilts over the fiddle which is beautiful.
I'm going to upset a few people here, especially after recent threads but I really enjoy listening to
Fiddle and *guitar* duos.
Also, whistle and mandolin can sound nice too.
However, there's lots of great combinations. It all depends on the choice of tunes and the ability/style of players involved.
I love listening to fiddle and whistle together...the rock-solid fiddle with all the great harmonies it can produce...and a light whistle floating an octave above it. It has a great sound.
I don't know that it's the particular instruments that make a great duet, more the personalities of the players. My favorite duet recordings at the moment would be Mick O'Brien and Caoibhín O'Raghaillaigh's "Kitty Lie Over" (pipes and fiddle), and Peter and Angelina Carberry's "Memories of the Holla" (banjo and box). Both of those are great examples of people who can really get inside each other's playing, and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
This may be just slightly off topic, but I saw Faudel, the latest young Algerian Rai Star at WOMAD on Friday. His Oud (I think) player played that instrument for a couple of numbers, then put it down and for the rest of the set played a five string banjo. In his hands it sounded like a pretty authentic North African instrument...
Makes you wonder
I don't think I could ever get sick of flute and fiddle. But one of my favorite duos is Mike and Mary Rafferty (flute and box). My music mentor happens to be a lovely old style C#/D box player and I love playing with this person more than anyone else.
How about 2 flutes? At the Catskills, I was talking to a mighty flute player now living in NYC. He was saying how much he loved the sound of 2 flutes.
2 new ones for ya Joe: The Vibra Slap & Cow Bell. Just saw both at my fiddle tutor's music studio/store. Don't know how they sound together though.
Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh & the late Frankie Kennedy "Ceol Aduaidh'.

A vibraslap is an Orff (and sometimes in orchestra) percussion instrument. It's hard to describe in words, so here's a picture: http://www.apollosaxes.com/donkeycall.html
1. Whistle & soap water
2. Low whistle & soap water (for bigger bubbles)
3. Flute & soap water (for side bubbles)
4. Two Highland Pipes filled with soap water (for bubble organza)
Drum tattoo and glockenspiels. I've just heard them in Deal town centre, max vol. All the townsfolk are looking like zombies with vacant eyes, and not even a spotty majorette in sight. Fastest Saturday morning shopping I ever did.

Lambeg and foghorn as a definite first.
Whistle and bodhràn, a distant second.

Isn't a banjo just a bodhran with strings, Bri?

Re: Favorite instrument duo
Bodhrán and flute, both well played, for a really tight sound.
(I almost said, you can´t beat it, but I didn´t !)

Re: Favorite instrument duo
Uilleann pipes and concertina without a doubt.

Re: Favorite instrument duo
Uilleann pipes and whistles. Because I do like whistles and you'd never hear them! Only joking.
Guitar and bouzouki is good. As is flute and fiddle - but it's so overdone, that it's become a bit passé.

Joe, I don't know what the h*ll it is. I saw it at the music store whilst waiting for my lesson. After googling:
http://www.music123.com/LP-Vibra-Slap-II-i60223.music
The link doesn't indicate whether it is:
tunable, english or anglo or whether there are tutors available. That's all I know.
