guitar tuning of "thiocfaidh an samhradh" by Altan
guitar tuning of "thiocfaidh an samhradh" by Altan
hi all
last night i had the pleasure to listen Altan live in Italy.
I think that the guitar player uses DADGAD for backing.
After listening to the song " thiocfaidh an samhradh " i went home and took the CD ( Another sky) to try to get the guitar line.
I have noticed that it is played in C ( ??).
Does anybody know if the guitar is tuned in another way ( one tone below ? only the low D down one tone?) and in case, the line of chords used ?
thank you
Marco

The Bothy Band version is definately in DADGAD - you even have a video clip to show you the chords he is playing.
The Altan version is probably in DADGAD too - C is certainly possible in DADGAD but he probably uses a very modern device known as a capo to achieve the key he is after.
I had not heard the song at all until I just watched that Bothy Band clip and can't help but notice that the song is not really in a major key. Don't know if the Altan one is or not.
Either way for key of C in DADGAD you can:
1. Play without a capo and use C shapes
2. Play with capo on 3rd fret and use A shapes
3. Play with capo on 5th fret and use G shapes
4. Play with capo on 7th fret and use F shapes (although I would question the wisdom of this)
5. Play with the capo on 10th fret and play D shapes (depends how good your guitar is)
I hope this helps. What you need to ask though is can you sing the song in C or whatever key. Pick a key that works for you.

The capo suggestions above were for the Altan version which has been reported as being in C. Presumably this would be a very different version of the tune as it would be a major key rather than minor.
