Hi,
I just thought id put a discussion up on the Folkworks Summer School in Durham as im going to it this summer. I was just wondering if anyone whose heard of it or been to it before had any thoughts they could share, maybe tell me what its like? im going up to do the guitar course, the tutour is Ian Stephenson, id never heard of him before anything on him would be appreciated aswell!
Thanks,
Scott
I'm going this year as well. Which summer school? The Adult or Youth? I'm going to the youth. I've been told by various friends that it's brilliant-I can't wait!
I'm going to youth aswell! I heard about it off some artists who came down here to HK to play at our festival, they seemed to think it was good as well. I'll see you ther!
I know loads of folks that have been to the youth summer school. They've all had a brilliant time, and the enthusiasm they brought from it was a great inspiration for me, even though I never went. Many of them have turned into brilliant musicians too.
Well I'm almost a yoof ss veteran (it'll be my third year this year. And apparently I'm in the folkworks 'in' crowd. (Titter titter.)
If you newbies don't know anyone there, I'm happy to make friends/introduce you to people/make you feel at home (especially if your group leader's a bit overwhelming. Not naming any names, but a certain short blonde lady is a bit scary ;) ).
Here's the info you need to know who I am:
*Short
*Verging on ginger
*Odd taste in clothes...but not hippy-ish
*Will usually be found with a red pvc 'Miffy' bag
*....and a penny whistle. Ace.
*My name's Rosie (it'll be on my tag thingy.
Hi all! This is going to be my 3rd year too. I'm also in the Youth. My name's Joe, or Joseph, and I play the fiddle. I'll probably be easily recognisable for being the only Londoner there (not to mention the only Jew. Almost forgot about that). I can't wait to go again, they've been some of the best times of my life.
It's a shame, though, that niether Pete Cooper nor Garry Shannon (two of the best tutors ,like, ever) will be there this year (anyone who was there last year will remember all the post-it notes about Garry! ).
Also, a warning for newcomers. The timetable says that the sessions finish at midnight. The timetable is wrong. The sessions finish either when our fingers have seized up from playing, or when the new day has already started.
Garry's a legend! He even signed my guestbook on my website (I was well chuffed).
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
Hehe. SO I remember you Joseph. This year I don't have to have a group leader (thank GOD) though if it's your first year anyone then it's a good thing. I'm CAN'T WAIT!!!! So excited. If you wan't to join the Punk Pixie Posse, bring something vaguely fairy-like to wear all week. Mint. I need to make some wings...
OH MY GOD IT'S ONLY 5 DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SO EXCITED!!!!
And instead of Garry we have Brian Finnegan (!!!) this year for whistle/flute. It's gonan rock.
PS - guy who didn't know who Ian is. He's well cool, and you'll have tons of fun in his class. He's a brilliant guitar player. He plays in the Pack and 422, and does other guitary things.
