Jack's too embarrassed to tell the other session members what his tune is because he secretly adores Morris tunes which showcase his bouncy push & pull nicely.
Right now a polka set by Patrick Street:
Where Lilies Bloom/The Village Tavern/The Four Cross Road. Especially the last one, but as being the end of the set, like the cream on top of the cake
"Castletown Connors" in Gmaj. It's a beautiful, old-fashioned tune. And I tried playing "Off to California" on flute this afternoon making believe I'm Harry Bradley. That's really fun.
Ok, my new favorite is Lt. Maguire's jig which I have been working on this weekend.
Right now, I needed a new tune like a hole in the head. I'll be learning loads next week at the Catskills, I have heaps of current ones that need work, and yet I just *had* to learn Lt. Maguire's which is a Scottish tune to boot!
Yes, John it's a great tune. I've got to hear Lanigan's Ball again to hear the similarity. I'll have to check my Cds to see if it's on one of them.
I got it off an Alisdair Fraser Cd which we got by accident. Apparantly, when my husband was Christmas shopping and picked up several Cds as gifts, it mysteriously found it's way into the bag. He doesn't even remember looking at it in the store.
Anyway, also got to see Alisdair in Chicago in April and was blown away by his playing, so that's why I just had to learn the tune...
It's been fun seeing the different tunes people have as favorites/are currently working on. Mine is STILL Exile at the moment, but it's getting crowded by Mike McGoldrick's Jig, or maybe Tom Billy's Jig. Soooo many tunes to learn...
I've been thinking about this thread a bit and the tune that is usually my favorite is the one I happen to be learning at the time, or the one I'm about to learn. I've noticed that, for me, there's something magic about a tune that will grab my head and I just-have-to-learn-it. But just like a card trick; when you first see a good one -- you can't believe it and you're amazed. But after you learn it the trick doesn't seem as amazing any more. This happens for me with some tunes, but not all. After I learn them I enjoy playing them, but I'm always looking around at the eyes of my friends who are listening to see if they have that look of wonderment about the tune. (Provided I’m even playing it decently)
On the other hand, if I were going to pick a tune that has remained a favorite I'd have to say that “Fisherman's Island” might be a good candidate. I like it a lot, just like I like a lot of tunes, but it will show up without thinking about it quite often on my flute. I don't have a tune that shows up like that on my concertina, and I don't play that tune on it either -- so I really don't know what this all means really. (ATTENTION DOW: This is a good set up for a crack about the Anglo)
I've got better things to do with my time than to even think about anglos.
I've been revising some of my slides and keep coming back to "The Long Note", and then I end up playing "Jenny's Welcome To Charlie" after it, which is one of my long-standing favourites, or "favorite", as you yanks like to misspell it
Nothing wrong with putting a slide before a reel, Jack. I can think of a few recordings where that happens. I suppose with the limitations of the anglo you wouldn't be able to think outside the square enough to play anything but reels in G. Ah well, maybe one day you might realise there are other keys and you'll want to upgrade to an English.
I could see you going from a slide to a reel if you were forcing your instrument to be bouncy because it isn't naturally so. Of course you could do it much easier with an Anglo you know.
BTW -- have you heard "Dancing on Silver" yet, Dow? It's a brilliant new CD by concertina player, Tim Collins. I'm sure he's playing an Anglo since he lives in Clare and it sounds so good.
I'd play some German oompah-pah band music on an *anglo-german* concertina, or maybe I'd choose to play morris tunes. Sorry, if you're trying to earn my respect and awe by talking about
"bounce"
...as anglo players are wont to do...
then I'm afraid, well, you're just not going to get it, so there. As for Clare anglo players, great, good on 'em, I'm sure it sounds great.
...if you're happy listening to a whole CD of tunes in one key

From Collins Compact English Dictionary:
