Thieves should be shot...

Thieves should be shot...

...right where it hurts most. http://www.lunasa.ie/lunasa.php?mp=59 Why would someone be heartless enough to steal the instruments of people who make their living, WHILE they're on tour? The nerve of some people...keep a lookout for the stuff, folks.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

we just read the news ourselves, zina! wow. everyone keep your eyes open...all over the world....and not only while they were on tour, but when they were on stage playing!

well,,,,i don't know about shooting them, but for sure caught and sentenced to roadie status for lunasa for 5 years. they may come to appreciate the gravity / travesty of what they had done.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

This reminds me of a question someone ostensibly had for a Texan as to why murderers were sometimes aquitted, but horse thieves were always hung.

"Well, some folks just need killin'. But there ain't a horse been born yet what needed stealin'."

I wonder if Wendy Newton has a good alibi?

Re: Thieves should be shot...

Oh, man! That's horrible! Poor Lunasa! How could anyone be so nasty? Well, they'll have trouble selling them. Gee, I would be devastated if someone took one of mine, and they're not even worth that much. Well, they are to me. Poor Kevin! All of them. Well, let's hope that they're returned, or found.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

BTW -- Sean is such a great guy. Always looking on the bright side of things:

"nobody has been hurt (yet!) we have our health and our music and to say that the people in Wellington and Christchurch have been absolutely fantastic would indeed be an understatement!"

I mean, to keep an attitude like that in the face of what just happened to him has got to be pretty hard.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

On the other side of the world in another hemisphere in another year, I handled Lunasa's gear at a festival. Like every other band, they carry their livelihood with them everywhere they go, and we are sensitive to how valuable and valued the gear is.

I pray the right thing happens and they are all reunited without further incident. I wasn't so fortunate when a van load of gear went missing after a gig about 25 years ago, never to be seen again.

They deserve a happy ending.

Peace, Crocker.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

Ah poor Lunasa. I can't believe anyone would wanna do that its so cruel. I have met the lads a couple of times and there all so nice, thats pretty shitty. I pray they get there instruments back I can't imagine how horrible it must be to have an instrument stolen.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

It's not even "the money" as inconvenient as having to fork out for new instruments undoubtably is--whether insured or not. In some ways, I'd imagine that their own instruments are as much a part of the band as themselves and are, to a great extent, irreplaceable. I certainly wouldn't be happy having to play a different/new set of instruments no matter how good they were.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

ah crap. Hope they nail the bustards.

"a $6700 wooden flute made by Australian Mike Grinter. 'I had it on order for four years and I only collected it last week, Crawford said. 'It is the only one of its kind and it's the first one he has made.'

Anyone know anything more about this flute?

Re: Thieves should be shot...

Is there a New Zealand crew here? Anybody in Wellington? Be on the look-out for a blackwood flute or a set of uilleann pipes in a pawn shop or in your local bargain finder paper. You could be a hero.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

Oh, hang on - it's just a flute. Or flutes. I can't really tell from the stories how many of what type of instruments are out there.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

I had a big Guild 12 string guitar stolen from me at a gig in '81. I loved that guitar. I bought another with the insurance money, but I never developed a rapport with the new one, and my heart was no longer in it. I eventually quit playing it. The theft of a beloved instrument leaves the owner feeling violated, devastated.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

It is a disgusting thing when you can't even trust having an instrument backstage this makes me really really angry.

Absolutely incredible. The mind boggles at how low some humans are.

Does anyone know what was stolen, beside the flute?

Re: Thieves should be shot...

It's in the link that Q posted -- as well as the Grinter, one of Kevin's credit cards, passports, all the cash takings from their Australian gigs, camera, phone, and some other stuff. Man, I wouldn't want the karma the thief/thives will have from this theft...

Yeah, Q's link I meant to say...

Re: Thieves should be shot...

Fiddler - what on earth do you mean "Oh hang on it's just a flute..."

We kind of expect that people here have some sort of appreciation of what an instrument means to a musician. It's like having a member of the family kidnapped.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

She meant "just a flute" as opposed to "flute and uilleann pipes" - calm down.

# Posted on June 3rd 2004 by Dr. Dow

Re: Thieves should be shot...

OK OK - callllllming down now! Sorry I lost the bap.

Re: Thieves should be shot...

Since New Zealand is an island, maybe they'll have a better chance of finding the instruments before they get too far away. I bet it's not too often that a Mike Grinter flute just shows up in a New Zealand pawn shop.

# Posted on June 4th 2004 by suky

Re: Thieves should be shot...

No, I know about the passports and stuff, but I was wondering if any other instruments wre stolen, beside Kevin's flute. Anybody know?

Suky, exactly, look what someone said on Chiff & Fipple:

"Not exactly good news (yet) but cause for optimism. New Zealand is a small country—if you don't know it you wouldn't believe how small. It is also very isolated. If Lunasa are well advised, they might well have those instruments back within days. Grinter flutes do not exactly grow on trees, even if the raw ingredients do.

I belong to an internet group of southern hemisphere concertina players—mainly Australian but including New Zealanders. We haven't all met eachother but we all know eachother through the internet. The music scene for unusual instruments is pretty small here. Recently two very rare and valuable concertinas were stolen in New Zealand. We put the word out and they showed up, and the thieves were apprehended, within days. They tried to pass them off to a local secondhand store. There are distinct advantages to playing unpopular instruments. Now, if those concertinas had been Fender guitars.

I haven't looked up the story on their website but is it possible to contact Lunasa through it? If so, they should be told about this story. It seems to me likely that their NZ fans will be looking out for the instruments but it would do no harm to remind them that recovery is very likely if they act quickly. I can put the word out in Australia too if I can get exact details of what was stolen."

Encouraging, isn't it?

Re: Thieves should be shot...

Gaaaargh. that is not cool. All of the Lunasa guys are such sweet blokes. Does this mean that their summer school is cancelled in Picton, NZ?

# Posted on June 4th 2004 by b2jay

Re: Thieves should be shot...

It's likely that Lunasa does know about their chances of getting the Grinter back, as well as the rest of their stuff. My understanding is that everyone's been real helpful (though it would have been nice if they'd been real helpful before someone managed to get through security). Given the high public profile of the Lunasa boys, I'm sure the cops and locals are moving heaven and earth to find the things stolen...
