Pipemakers

Pipemakers

Hello everyone, I have been interested in getting a full set of pipes made for a while now, as the practice set I currently own is not nearly of good enough quality to expand on. For all you pipers out there, I am currently looking at Bruce Childress to make me a set but I am asking for any other suggestions to other makers. Thanks. -Mike

Re: Pipemakers

Try Ray Sloan in Northumberland, although he may have a 18mnth - 2 year waiting list at the moment. Any way His pipes are immaculate and look and sound better than on his web: http://www.ray-sloan.com I'm sure that there are many good makers out there, Seth Gallagher is another who comes to mind although I have no personal experience of his sets.
Have fun... ;-)

There's a link for Seth's site. He also makes Pratten style flutes.

Re: Pipemakers

Seth Gallagher has my vote, waiting for a concert D is about a year or so; the exchange rates are just a killer.

Re: Pipemakers

I ordered a full set from Seth and it should be read by this January. Lots of good pipers use Seth's sets, Jimmy O'Brien Moran, Paddy Moloney, and Jerry O'Sullivan, just to name a few. Go with Seth, you can't go wrong with him. Also, his wait less is usualy the shortest.

Re: Pipemakers

I own a full set of uilleann pipes made by Bruce Childress and I'm very, very happy with his set. It's a great instrument and Bruce is also very quick to answer any questions you might have.

You might also look into a set of Kirk Lynch pipes.. www.kirklynch.com I take lessons from him and his pipes are also great sounding.

Re: Pipemakers

I highly recommend Kirk Lynch. Good pix at his website, good service, great pipes. Look at his reference page - 2 All Ireland winners, Jerry O'Sullivan, Eliott Grasso...... Good names....

Hey ICTPiper - if you ever come into town give me a call.

Re: Pipemakers

yes, Kirk Lynch is in the books as well; I personally don't like the chalice bass ferule but rather the "hockey puck" style or what ever that end piece is called on the bass drone. But that's me. One of the guys in our Southern California club got regulators (3/4 set) for his Lynch set and it soounds wonderful. Wouldn't mind having a Lynch set either.

Re: Pipemakers

Kirk says the reason Kirk doesn't do the hockey puck bass resonator is because it introduces funky harmonics into the bass drone tone. My Lynch drones are extremely smooth.

I was up a Kirk's one day when he was finishing Mike Eskin's regs (the ones you saw). The next time I went up to his place I gave him a deposit for some regs. :-)

Re: Pipemakers

I saw those regualtors being unpacked for the Seattle tionol- very sweet indeed. But, anyone out there want to sell a C set; mmmm.

Yes, but I like hockey ;-) Go Kings- well, ok then....

Re: Pipemakers

With respect to visual aesthetics, I also like the hockey puck on the bass drone. However, I really liked the sound of the Lynch drones when I heard them up close in St. Louis at the tionol. I suppose that I'd really need to play both kinds to make a really objective comparison. I've received a new Childress full set since returning from St. Louis and there is a noticable difference between the drones even though both use the hockey puck configuration.

Re: Pipemakers

Hey Bill,

It was kind of hard to miss Kirk's drones in that class we took in St. Louis. There were 4 of us playig his 1/2 sets. :-) Michael Cooney's Froment drones were as smooth as could be I thought. So do you like your new hockey puck better than your old one? I thought the set you were playing (and your playing in general)in St Louis sounded great.

Re: Pipemakers

Hi Jeff,

The new hockey puck is nice and shiny ni-chrome plated brass and has a smaller aperture than the old plain brass one.

The new Childress drones have a better balance than the Thomas drones I was playing ( I thought that my old baritone drone was a little on the quiet side ). It took my ears a while to adjust to the sound of the new mix of the drones and chanter since the harmonics of the overall blend of the drones and chanter seem to be a bit more lush than my old set ( does that make sense? ). I know I'm interupting my playing a lot more often to answer imaginary phone calls. The wife, my most trusted critic, says they sound great.

My comment about the Lynch drones was based on hearing your set. Very nice!

Re: Pipemakers

yeah, "lush" makes perfect sense. You should post some pix over at the chiff in the "pictures of your pipes" thread.
