Re: What are your current 10 or so favorite tunes?

Er...are these current favorite tunes that I *play*, or just tunes that I really like?

Christmas Eve, because of it's grace
Hunters Purse, I don't know why, I just really like it's drive, I guess
Sean Reid's Favorite, especially with the F natural in the B part
Guns of the Magnificent Seven, although I just heard a version of it with the C part all in 4/4 that Larry Nugent played for me -- but I think I like the 3/4 measure version better, frankly, even if Fintan McManus *does* play it the 4/4 way
Sailing Through Walpole's Marsh
White Petticoat
Boys of Ballisadare (the slip jig) also because of it's grace, especially played a little on the slow side
Barney Bralligan's, for the same reason
Bunker Hill, because it's so damn fun to play

Oh, and the tenth is...er...oh, the Cordal Jig, maybe, or perhaps Kitty's Rambles.

Re: What are your current 10 or so favorite tunes?

It's always hard to pick favourites as they'll change from week to week. However, here's some of them(Irish only). They'll be different tomorrow.

Off to Puck fair
The Frieze Breeches(I buried my wife)
The Swedish jig
Spirits of wine
Star above the garter
Dance of the Honeybees
The Roaring barmaid
Donegal lass
Julia Delaney(I like it too :-)
Christmas Eve

I love all the above tunes but, in truth, it's probably just a selection from my many favourites. It will be intersting to see which other tunes are listed, though.

Re: What are your current 10 or so favorite tunes?

Hughie's cap
Paddy Lynn's delight ...both nicked from a John Carty CD but not played as a set
The Swan
Lilting Banshee/Up in the air as a jig set
Three unnamed polkas (not much help that one ...sorry) I am just learning as a set
Boys of Ballycastle/Bonaparte crossing the Rhine as a hornpipe set

(Btw with reference to a previous thread, King of the Fairies is one of my all-time favourite tunes)

Re: What are your current 10 or so favorite tunes?

Jolly Tinker (still my fave)
Spike Island Lasses (just discovered this - cheers Kenny)
College Groves (still love this one)
The Red Bee (love the lift of the third part and the room for variation)
The House of Hamill (a great Ed Reavy tune)
Friel's Reel (or Gan Ainm from Mary Bergin's album Feaḍga Stàin )
Jim Seery's (simple but effective)
Rakes of Clonmel (love this jig)
Paddy Fahy's Jig (the one that people play minor and major - I play it minorish)
Ward's Bow (I'm playing this one I wrote alot at the moment, and it seems to go well with some other big tunes, love to know what others think of it)

Re: What are your current 10 or so favorite tunes?

These are a few of my new tunes that I really love to play:

Cameronian reel (heard at a nice house session)
Pretty Girls of Mayo (goes nicely after the Cameronian, fun on the flute)
The Stolen Reel (by Paddy O'Brien. Learned off Mike & Mary Rafferty's CD called the Dangerous Reel)
Chattering Magpie reel (from the Dangerous Reel CD)
Drogheda Lasses (a lovely reel taught by Shannon Heaton at a workshop)
Pull the Knife and Stick it Again (lovely eminor jig from Matt Molloy's black album)
Contentment is Wealth jig (from a workshop with Mike McHale)
Leg of the Duck (an old jig from my box player friend)
The Cat that ate the Candle (another jig from this box player)
Job of the Journeywork (from Michael Tubridy's new set dance CD)

Jeremy, I definitely love and need to learn Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel and the Roscommon reel!

As interesting as it is to see what people don't fancy, it's also fun to see what current tunes everyone is learning and enjoying : )

Ben S - I'm sure there are people out there that would cringe at a few personal favorites of mine that I haven't listed, and that's quite ok : )

I really do like these tunes, but they have been overplayed a bit in some sessions I've attended : )

But those are funny tune titles. I have to admit the "Road Kill-Fox is all over" made me laugh out loud.....

Re: What are your current 10 or so favorite tunes?

Paddy Fahy's Nos 1-10

I'm only saying that for a wee laugh but it's probably appropriate as I can't remember any names of tunes anyway. Here's some I do remember, but it changes every week:

The Earls Chair (with a big A drone the whole way through)
Thank God We're Surrounded by Water
Paddy Keenan's Jig
Paddy Taylor's
Katie Taylors (Are they by any chance related)
The Green Groves Hornpipe
The First Flight of Geese (From Gerald Trimble LP)
Kishor's Tune - (Soig Siberil)
Lorient est Grand (Den - just around the window)
Kings Selma (Hedningarna)

Bubbling under: The Waiting Waltz - Vasen

Can we increase this by a factor of 10? I feel like I'm only getting started...

Re: What are your current 10 or so favorite tunes?

Zina,
I learned Donegal Tinker from Cathal Haydn's self titled CD (and had to slow it down considerably to get it because he plays it SO fast) I sent it off to a banjo-player friend who lives in Toronto who immediately was smitten with it, and learned it right away, but he's the ONLY one I have to play it with, and sadly I see him buonly twice or three times year. It's a great tune, so I play it by myself mostly. Where did you learn it?

Re: What are your current 10 or so favorite tunes?

Hi Jamie,
Ive no idea if they are from Cork - they are from the band 'Calico' with Tola Custy and the other brother Donncha Moynihan. Pretty much 90% of the tunes on Calico's album are written by Diarmaid (and they are just awesome), with a few from Deirdre and Tola(also awesome). I would put them on the website but I'm afraid I cant read music. The 3 tunes mentioned are on 'Songdogs' by Calico - wicked album. Maybe Dow can post 'Across the Rooftops' I know he plays it too:)

Re: What are your current 10 or so favorite tunes?

Yeh, the family are definitely from Cork: Deirdre, Donncha and Diarmaid. I had no idea they played in a band together, but it doesn't surprise me. Deirdre also sings classically somewhere in Dublin, and so, she was there in Cork only a couple of times when I was in Cork, but I played music with the other two almost every week. Really great musicians. Donncha has a quite unusual, but really effective, guitar style. Deirdre has a really flowing smooth fiddle style, with very little staccato (triplets) and she will put in lots of (slurred in) passing notes rather than leaving long notes - a style which I'm finding more and more appealing. Diarmaid is a great piper who also has a hilarious and sharp wit, with a bloomin cheeky face to match!!
