I am learning to play the bodhran, mostly because I'm too popular and need a way to alienate people. I've been perusing the threads here, and you seem like a fun bunch, so I thought I'd say hi. Also, I'm going to be in Ireland the last week in May (Dublin to Galway to Cork). Since I understand that the most important thing a novice bodhran player (is the correct term "bore"?) can do is attend sessions without his/her drum and listen attentively, I was wondering if anyone could direct me toward places to do just that while I'm visiting. I promise I won't even drum on the table!!!
By the way, why is it that when you do a Google search for "goat-banger" you don't get ANY links regarding bodhrans?
imp, when I was in Ireland last summer Ennis, co.Clare, had some great sessions, both for listening and sad-goat beating. Unfortunately I can't remember the names of the pubs! *perusing photo album* OK, Ciaran's has a pretty hot session from time to time, and when I was there Siobhan Peoples and Murty Ryan were playing regularly at a pub called Cruise's. Both of those sessions would probably be bad places to bring your bodhran. There are however, at least two completely open and welcoming slower sessions in town. If you want info about this, most of the international drifters working at the Abbey Tourist Hostel near Cruise's are musicians who stopped in for a weekend and never left town. Drop in and they will happily give you all the details.
So now I know why all the links that DID show up on my web-search were from Australia ;p
Thanks to both Fiddler & Zina for the tips. Ennis isn't on my itinerary at the moment, although maybe I'll put it there. I'll make a note of it for my next trip, if nothing else.
And no, my name isn't Lee and I doubt you know me, but it's nice to meet you all the same!
Lee, I strongly suggest you put Ennis on your itinerary. Galway and Dublin didn't seem to have much to offer in terms of friendly, open sessions. The beginner session I heard in Galway was yer typical cacophony (useless for getting a feel for the rhythm but maybe OK for memorizing a bunch of notes strung together) and the expert sessions were both exclusive and impossible to hear. There seemed to be nothing in between. the Dublin session I went to was good, but hard to find and also very exclusive, small, and hard to hear. Ennis is on the way from practically anywhere in Ireland to Galway. (Unless you're coming from the north, but you aren't). If you spend one night there at a friendly session where you are able to join in or just listening to a top notch session with the some of the best players Clare has to offer, it might end up being the hilite of your trip. I know nothing about Cork, though. If anybody in Galway or Dublin wants to chime in and tell me I've got it all wrong, please do! If you have an intimate, brilliant session or one that welcomes novice goat thumpers in either city, speak up!
Ok, ok, you've convinced me FOV...I will put serious consideration into stopping off in Ennis enroute to see Kila play in Cork. If I do, I promise to report back on the experience!
Bren, if I were a Mason, wouldn't I have to kill you for outing me? Not that I AM a Mason...oh no, not me. I am, however, loosely affiliated with the Imps of Zurich...
You know, if you get very drunk and start chanting "goat-banger" at the top of your lungs, something very interesting happens. But it only works if your in public.

Looking forward to learning much,

Also go by Custy's, just around the corner from Cruise's -- can't go wrong there, either.

Re: Single female goat-banger seeks victims
Geoffmca has a point. Some of the results of a Google search for "goat-banger" could not possibly be discussed on a family site such as this

Re: Single female goat-banger seeks victims
when in dublin, go to the cobblestone pub.
I was there 2 times, good session, but to my idea, not very open to newcomers.

Either you're with the IoZ or you're not. "Loosly affiliated" isn't an option.
