Joyce it's a trek out on the train but no distance for a seasoned traveller like yourself. It's on a Monday night, starts around 8.30 and lasts 'til at least 2. A real bugger to get home from but there's always taxi sharing and a train at 2.30AM (I think).
Fantastic atmosphere, very welcoming.
Joyce are you coming over for Return to Camden Town Festival? If so we will get to meet as my band is playing there this year. Conan is right about the Herschell...it is a really welcoming session with a very high standard of visiting, and resident, musos.
Summerbrookhouse! Who are you ..your bio. is a little skimpy. I live in Reading and, since the demise of the Eldon Arms session and Paddy Coyne's departure there has been very little going on. What do you play. I would be interested in going to a new session. Please get in touch
Hi Geoff, Yes I'm coming out for that festival. I'm very excited as it will be my first time to the UK. It will be so cool to meet you and your band. I was just looking at the pictures on RCT's website yesterday. Wow, it looks like a wonderful festival. I can't wait!
I wonder who will be doing the flute workshops.......but I'm sure I'll be posting a thread as the time gets closer : )
Come on Summerbrookhouse - give us a place, a day and a time. I get to visit my mother in law at 3mile Cross on the Basingstoke road out of Reading a few weekends each year, and would welcome somewhere else to go on the Saturday evening - (or all the time we're there, really).
There are fairly frequent trains (at least 1 every 1/2 hour) back to London Paddington until 1.10am. Then the next one is at 2.56. If I were you, I'd aim to be at the station for 1.00. I speak from experience. Last week, being my first time at the Herschel in some Months, I had forgotten the train times, and missed the 1.10 by 10 minutes. Slough has very little going for it at that time on a monday night. So I was doomed to 1 1/2 hours of strolling up and down the station - it was a chilly night, so that was preferable to sitting on a bench.
I live in Reading but as there are no sessions in Reading itself, I usually go out to the Wallingford area where there is an abundance of them. There are also sessions at Stanford Dingley, The Pot Kiln, Frilsham and Bewbury
Howdy, great to hear that there are musicians in the area. I live in Reading. I have been playing concertina for about 3 years and am currently spending my monday evenings in West london with a bunch of musicians learning tunes from Brendan Mulcaire. I play guitar and sing a bit also.
There used to be a session in the Eldon Arms on a regular basis but sadly it is demised. I have spectatored in the Herschal Arms many times and it is a great session (too fast for me at the moment). I would be keen to meet up with fellow interested musicians, getting a venue shouldn't be difficult.
Too fast at the Herschell? Whatever can you mean? It took well over an hour last monday to get through O'Neill's 1001 tunes! (I can only think someone pivotal might have have been on the Bolivian marching powder(!)
I'd invited a young lady with a smashing voice along with the promise that it would be a great place for her to sing a couple of Irish songs (she'd never been to an Irish session before, only singer's sessions). At that point in proceedings the players were entirely male, and everyone was going at it hell-for-leather. The smell of testosterone hung heavy in the air and she just freaked, made her excuses and disappeared. A shame really, because I'm sure she would have loved it had she waited till things calmed down a bit. Oh well - I'm sure I can entice her back some time in the future - it is surely the best a session can get(!)
SummerBH - If you find a venue, please let us know In the past in Reading I've been to sessions at The Dove, The Claddagh Ring, The Butler, Millers Arms and a couple of one-offs in other pubs. (Mike Tierney used to organise a lot of local sessions). With the demise of local sessions and the problems of parking in Reading I go further afield.
I have played with Mike on a couple of occasions, he's a real character! I haven't seen him in quite a while with his battered Guild guitar and rollies, quite an escentric
John
Yes Mike's a real character - I've gigged with him on several occasions - and he's even stayed conscious until the end of some of them!! But Mike's a great organiser and with Mike not organising so many sessions these days, Reading has nothing locally. Bill McKinnon/Dave Newson have been responsible for the starting up of several sessions around Wallingford/Blewbury/Brightwell cum Sotwell etc but I would still like to see something in the Reading area
Mike finds his way to the Brightwell cum Sotwell session sometimes. Not an awful lot of other people do, (I suppose I should post it here). Any sesh starved denizens of Reading could try finding the Pot Kiln this Sunday, there promises to be a reasonable Irish tune contingent - provided that Ewan and Teresa from Oxford can fing their way there(!)

SummerBH - do you have a particular pub in mind, or will you be starting from scratch?
As we've discussed this before, if you trawl through these 2 threads you might pick up some tips about organising a sesh:
