Record Stores in Boston?

Record Stores in Boston?

Greetings,

out of lurk mode to inquire if any of youse can recommend any record shops in Boston with a good selection of ITM - my bias is towards uilleann piping and sean nos, but I'm not fussy. Heading there tomorrow for a few days.

Thanks,
Mark

Ahhh Boston, I have a lot of good memories of that town. Lived there for two and a half years when I was in the Coast Guard.
Dont remember any record shops, but you have to check out the Black Rose whilst your there. Great Irish pub!!

Re: Record Stores in Boston?

I live about an hour away from Boston and used to buy most of my CDs there (mostly before I got interested in Irish music). In the last five years or so, I've stopped almost entirely. I've been buying Irish recordings by mail order from Custy's and Green Linnet, and at festivals from Andy's Front Hall and Ossian USA.

Sandy's Music (Mass Ave, Central Sq, Cambridge) used to have some ITM, but it's been years since I've been there and I think I heard that Sandy stopped carrying CDs in order to concentrate on instruments (though I may be imagining that).

There are the big chains - HMV, Virgin (is Tower still around?), Borders - but I found that their inventory was highly dependent on the current state of the distribution system. There were years when they had a wonderful selection, and others where it was dismal.

There's a good used record shop in Davis Sq, Somerville. Disc Diggers, I think it's called. Of course, with used, it's hit or miss. Probably not much pipe music or sean nos.

Can't think what else to recommend. Good luck.

Re: Record Stores in Boston?

Jeremy, have you been to Jimmy's shop? I haven't been there in a while. I need to stock up on a few CD's next time I'm down there. I wish it was a bit closer for me......If I lived in Boston, I'd be there all the time listening to stuff including his massive vinyl collection in the back room.

Mark, It's a great place just 30 minutes South of Boston in Norwood. (Exit 15a or b off of I-95). Just follow the signs for the hospital. The shop is right next to it on Washington Street.

Jimmy has an excellent collection of Irish Trad Music. I would rate it up there with Custy's in Ennis. Jimmy might even have a bigger selection. Give him a call. He's open Wed-Sat. I don't know anyone who loves the Music more than Jimmy so stop by the shop. It's totally worth it. And he's a great flute player too!!

Cheers,

Joyce

Joyce,

Haven't been to Jimmy's shop yet but a trip up to Boston is definately in the plans for the summer. I'm particularly excited about the vinyl - I'm doing a happy, Dr. Evil-ish laugh right now.

Re: Record Stores in Boston?

lol....yeah I wish it was for sale. But if it had been for sale, I would have cleaned him out 2 years ago : )

Damn, I'd take out a second mortgage on the house just to come home with all that great vinyl....*sigh*.....

Re: Record Stores in Boston?

Oops! Forgot about Noonan's. I've only been there for concerts when all you see is what's on the wall display racks (lots of interesting stuff, but not comparable to Custy's), but maybe ordinarily there's much more. And it's one block from the commuter rail station, so you can get there from the city without a car if need be.

Re: Record Stores in Boston?

During his concerts he has a lot of stuff put out back. I would say it is comparable to Custy's. I've been to both shops several times. Believe me I know his inventory : )

Re: Record Stores in Boston?

I would recommend giving Jimmy a call before making a trip to his shop. I just discovered his shop last summer, and the place I always go during the summer is about 1-1.5 hours away. I made the drive to his shop only to find out that he had changed his hours for the summer b/c business was a bit slow. I guess the summer must be his slow season. Anywho, since it is basically him that works the shop, I would just be on the safe side and give a call ahead of time to make sure he'll be there.
