Looking for Tommy Mulvihill, and estates of Joe Liddy and Paddy Taylor

Looking for Tommy Mulvihill, and estates of Joe Liddy and Paddy Taylor

Hello Again--

Spurred on by the immediate success of my query yesterday about Attracta Brady and Brian Ryan (thanks so very much--I agree with the comment on that query that this site is amazing), I'd like to ask about a few more composers.

I'm also looking for Tommy Mulvihill, son of Charlie Mulvihill for permission on one of Charlie's tunes. I believe Tommy is in New York.

Also, I thought I'd give Joe Liddy and Paddy Taylor one last shot. I have been in touch with Comhaltas about many Irish composers. Concerning Joe Liddy and Paddy Taylor, they believed their estates would be very difficult to track down and advised that we go ahead with their music anyway. We intend to do that, based on the Comhaltas recommendation. However, if anyone here knows how to get in touch with their estates, we would welcome that. We like to get stories about the tunes, use the preferred setting of the composer, and, we do pay royalties on the music we use.

In the Attracta Brady/Brian Ryan discussion, someone asked if I am associated with The Portland Collection. Yes. We are working on Vol 2. We are at the very end of the tune research phase--the 3 composers here are the only ones we have not been able to locate. There are around 140 tunes under copyright, and 100 composers we have had to find. The Net has been an amazing resource, this site not the least of that.

Thanks again!

You might be able to contact Paddy Taylor's estate via Alan O'Leary. His website is at http://www.alanoleary.com, and his e-mail address is alan.oleary@btinternet.co.uk.

When is Vol 2 coming out?? I ( this year) got exposed to the tune book and found that the notes about the tunes enlivened the music, providing history and a sense of place for the music.

We think we're about a year from the publication of Volume 2. We've been working for 2 years and are at the end phase of the research. You can follow the progress by going to the Web site, http://www.theportlandcollection.com. And if you write to me off group, I can put you on a list to be notified by email when Vol 2 comes out. Thanks for your interest.

Re: Looking for Tommy Mulvihill, and estates of Joe Liddy and Paddy Taylor

Hi, Susan,
If you remember, I was much involved in the debate about the reel I know as "Little Katy Taylor". I see that you're trying to contact the estate of Paddy Taylor. Is that to do with that particular tune? Did you come up with any evidence from outwith "The Session" concerning the tune's origins? I only ask because I don't think the matter was ever really fully resolved here, and it's still in the database as one of many "Gan Ainm"s. I'll be keeping an eye on the portlandcollection website, and look forward to the book coming out. Best wishes, kenny
