It's going to be a rainy mess tomorrow--high of 60 or so--which led me to think of you nice folks out there in your various cool, damp lands....
Would something bad happen to my guitar if I left it in my car trunk all day? (I'm not worried about it being stolen.) Besides needing to be tuned...would it actually damage the instrument? Warp the wood? crack it?
My alternative is to drag it in with me to work, which would mean leaving it in a LESS secure place.
If I would leave it in the trunk, would it help to cover it with something? put the whole case in a a big plastic bag?
(Hope this doesn't sound too ridiculous...)
(Actually I'm really grateful to have you folks to ask this of, even if it is ridiculous.)
Thanks
Gena
I would probably rather keep it inside at work. Is there an office room or anywhere at all that it could be kept safe? Maybe a locked broom closet or something?
And your question is not ridiculous. The weather is crappy here, too. I opted not to bring my fiddle to work today, just in case I would get caught in the rain. Well we had torrential downpours and I walk and take public trans, so I'm sure it would have gotten wet--right thru the case.
In So California, it gets hot and dry. I've left my guitar(a Martin) in the trunk for most of the day but retireved it at 4 o'clock to go play with no ill results. I would think that wet and humid is a lot better than hot and dry, BUT, I have Uilleann pipes as well and am PARANOID with leaving them in the car
hi Gena,
"Dear Abby" doen't think there are ridiculous questions, me neither. IMO, 60s (F) out of the sun shouldn't be too bad, but after
reading the Instrument Horror Stories thread, http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/3274
my first choice these days would be inside, in view.
BTW I've played in the 30s (F) with nylon strings, in sleet,
(brings new meaning to Morning has Broken at the sunrise services) with TLC the guitar survived to play again.
Drag it over to work. Car trunk in not the best place to leave your guitar in (from my former guitar's experience), to leave your ice-cream in (from my mum's experience) nor to sleep in (as far as I can remember).
The weather around here is mighty. Wish it was like that here all year round.
You can leave your guitar in a trunk many times and have no visible damage. However, I think most luthiers, particularly in climates where the temperature gets above, say, 75F, have seen instruments damaged by prolonged overheating.
As a rule of thumb, I suggest you never leave your guitar any place you wouldn't leave your child. Assuming you're fond of your child, that is.
This has nothing to do with crummy weather, but I always take my fiddle with me and never leave it unattended in the car. It would be upsetting to get the car stolen, but if my fiddle was inside, it would be a billion times worse. Even if I thought it was secure, I'd have to know for sure. Carry it and leave it where you can see it. Its worth it.
