Hi- just a simulation.
what would You do if You had to start right now a new band of traditional Irish Music?
How many players /instruments would you like in it , in order to achieve Your ideal sound /atmosphere ?. Would You want singers in it or You'd just stick on instrumental music?
I 'm aware that the first possible objection can be that this depends on how good the players are (and how many instruments they can play, including voice), but it'd be really interesting anyway to know your opinions.
ciao
Add a piper (who might also play flute/whistle), bouzouki (could also be the guitarist or mandolin man). A harp would be nice too but then you could leave the keyboards out. None of these musicians should sing---unless they can!!! If not, get a good singer who needn't play an instrument unless he/she can! About 5 people sounds just right.
I wondered whether to post just this thread myself, but Max beat me to it.
Remember to keep your line up to Irish made instruments, traditional in Irish music, and your players to bring their birth certificates showing at least 3 grandparents and 1 parent to be born in Ireland.
Tongue firmly in cheek (an ill favoured cheek sir, but mine own)
I think ideally, the fiddle should be one, the pipes/whisle a must, button box/concertina, bouzouki/guitar and lastly the bodhran...but only if he/she can sing (the rest og the lot can help with choruses, etc.)...I guess that's five!
But seriously, I like fiddle/pipes/bouzouki, fiddle/concertina/bouzouki, flute/pipes/bouzouki, flute/concertina/bouzouki, pipes/concertina/bouzouki and fiddle/flute/bouzouki.
Guitar played with sensitivity and skill could substitute for the 'zouki, too.
I just think that the silence and space of more austere instrumentation and arrangements makes for more interesting listening and performing because:
A: There are no safety nets. It also forces one to be creative with variations and you can't hide behind fast tempos.
B: To me, it feels more honest both as a listener and a performer, like the performer is trying to say something rather than sell beer, CDs, and concert tickets.
Of course good old two-row button accordion could sub for concertina or even a well-played harmonica (with some amplification). Sh*t, even piano accordion will work with the right person sitting behind it (Jimmy Keane!!!!!)
Don't mean to slight anybody.
Some subtle studio enhancements might be ok once in a while, but the core of the band must be strong enough to work well without it.
High standards yeah and that means a lot of hard work but the result is worth it.
As a fiddle / harp / hammered dulcimer / piano / mandolin / guitar / percussion playing singer I would like to meet a singing pipe / guitar / whistle / flute / bouzouki player and a concertina / cello / hurdy gurdy / zither / oud / sitar player who can tapdance. Anyone interested?
Me-Harp
Paddy Moloney-Pipes
Sean Keane-Fiddle
Tommy Peoples-Fiddle
Kevin Conneff-Bodhran
Matt Molloy-Flute
Sean O'Riada-Harpischord
Sean Potts-Tin Whistle
Maybe some vague reference to "the Village People"? Maybe he's saying in his ideal band someone would have to dress like a cowboy. someone like an indian, somebody else like a cop, etc...
LOL -- I note that the headline is a little misleading. Seems like the inhabitants of Llanddewi Brefi don't care so much as all that...so, is the sketch actually very funny?
I see... I think those Brit TV references pretty much have to be "snap snap, grin grin, know what I mean?" caliber before they make it to the frozen North.
My ideal would be a sesiun with....Pipes, two Fiddles, Flute, Whistle, Banjo, Button Accordian, Guitar and Bodhran.
My Dream Band-so many good ones past and present to choose from!!!
Paddy Maloney-Pipes
Martin Hayes-Fiddle
Kevin Burke-Fiddle
Matt Malloy-Flute
Mary Bergin-Whistle
Mick Malone-Banjo
Sharon Shannon-Button Accordian
Dennis Cahil-Guitar
Donnchadh Gough-Bodhran
Oh and Seamus Egan could fill in for just about everyone while they were getting pint's o' Guinness!
a brilliant combination would be
Benny McCarthy on the box
Michael McGoldrick on the flute
Padraig Rynne on concertina
Andy Irvine on bouzouki or Arty McGlynn on guitar
John McSherry on the pipes
John Joe Kelly on the bodhran
Donal O Connor on the flddle

Re: The ideal Trad. music band
Personally, I like Dervish's instrumentation (including the vocals), but then again, I really like their sound as well.

Re: The ideal Trad. music band
Financially you're best of having no more than three people otherwise it's often not worth it. Something like Fiddle, Guitar and a singer.
For the sound I'd go for Fiddle/Mandolin(??), Flute/T.W., Accordion/Concertina, Banjo/Mandolin(??), Guitar/Bouzouki and maybe a bodhran.
Cheers

Re: The ideal Trad. music band
Fiddle, fiddle, guitar, zouk, mando, whistle.
I'd like a box, but that's optional.
And that lineup is coincedentally what I'm trying to do....

Re: The ideal Trad. music band
I'd put together pipes, a flute, tin whistle, bodhran, squeeze box, bones, fiddle, a harp, and maybe a timpian. Haha, sound recognizable?

Re: The ideal Trad. music band
My band goes something like this:
Vocals/guitar/djembe, Vocals/guitar/flute/whistle/zouk/mando/bodhran, Vocals/whistle/flute/piano/cello, and fiddle/guitar
we've got pretty versatile instrumentation but if we were to pick up a fifth person it would most likely be a squeezebox

Re: The ideal Trad. music band
To build on this thread, how about your ideal band line up? Maybe this has been done before....
Choose musicians and weapons
And no cheating - you can't pick all/most of the members of an existing band or one that used to exist i.e the Bothy Band
Just to get the ball rolling:
Paddy Keenan - pipes
Paddy Glackin - fiddle
Steve Cooney - guitar
Mary Bergin - Whistle
Harry Bradley - Flute
Peadar O'Riada - Harmonium
Andy Irvine - vocals/bouzouki
and I would stand behind the curtain with my bodhrán! :¬)
