Is it ok to post a few bars of abc here? I have a tune that Iearnt from a box player years ago and I don't know the name of it. I've tried the 'abc fragment' search to no avail.
Jim, if you can't find what you want on this website you could also try JC's ABC Music database at http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/findtune.html
JC's is a very large database, and fragment search is supported.
When doing a fragment search it's usually good policy to simplify the fragment to the "bare bones" by stripping out ornaments and chords, because these extraneous things obscure the structure of the fragment and will probably render the search ineffective.
If the search fails initially it may help to transpose the fragment to another key and search again. For instance, flautists like tunes in G, but the fiddle player may very well prefer the same tune in A.
It's possible that the box version of the tune may not be in the key the tune is more commonly played in.
Best of luck!
Trevor
Thanks Trevor. I'm pretty sure it's in the right key. And I still can't find it. I just thought that if it was ok to post a few bars of it here, some one would recognise it. Unless some one tells me yay or nay I'd better leave it out.
I see your from Bristol. Do you ever come across Henry Seers (fiddle) I know he gets around the Bristol sessions, haven't seen him for years.
Jim, The first workshop I attended was given by Henry Seers 3 years ago (almost to the day) in Chew Magna, a few miles south of Bristol. I was very impressed by his teaching. I haven't seen him since, but I understand he's still very much around. I think he's based in Bath.
Re your tune, under the circumstances, since you can't track it down, I don't see any harm in posting those few bars of abc here. It's been done before, but I think Jeremy prefers that people make every effort to track down tunes by other means, as you've done. There's a fighting chance that someone will recognise it.

Ok here go's. This is the first 4 bars: F2AB AFED|F2AB AFED|A,2 EA, FA,EA,|AFEF E2DE|
I'm new to abc but I think that's right. It's playing ok in Abcmus .
It's a reel with 3 parts. The Fs and Cs are sharp accept for couple of C nats in the last part.
Any one recognise it?
Trevor,
Henry and used to rattle up a bit of dust together many years ago, nice to hear he's still around.
Jim, since you apparently have the complete tune, why not post it in the tunes section in a couple of weeks time (a life-time on this website!)? If someone has a name for it by then, well and good; otherwise post it as a "gan ainm".
Trevor
You're right Trevor. I expect this thread will drop to the bottom of the page and disappear from view soon, due to the misleading 'subject' line. I shall do as you suggest and post it as a new tune and see if any one recognises it. I'm sure they will, it's a very distinctive tune. I should explain that the reason I want the name is because I'm putting together a selection of my favourite tunes on a CD that I'm recording. It would be nice to have all the names and to give any known composers credit where due.
Thanks Dow, I see what you mean, but it's not that one. I'm just making sure that I have the abc correct for it and I'll post it in it's entirety. It'll probably turn out to be French Canadian or something

Go ahead and post the fragment here, Jim: it's clear that you've exhausted all other avenues in tracking down a name for it.

Jim, it's difficult to tell with such a short snippet, but your tune sounds as though it might be a setting of "The Oak Tree" http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/212
