Hi everyone - my name is quite new here. But don't let that worry you because I have to share with you how brilliantly fast a player I am.
At a session recently I brought along a stopwatch and got some of my friends to time how fast I could play some reels and jigs - the fastest I got was the Sally Gardens, which maybe one or two of the more intelligent members among you might possibly have heard of.
It's a 2-part reel so easy to get a fast time on. If played the usual way in sessions, ie, each part twice over, I reckon my time of 26.24 secs must easily be a world record.
Some chap who happened to be listening remarked "You must be a rich man judging by the number of notes you dropped" but they're wrong, I'm not rich, I just sound it. Daddy's second multinational went belly-up last week. Whatever can this wretched person mean?
Um, "Fatwah," your wife called, she said you can keep your 'quick diddling' to yerself, she's run off with the piper who can bend lonnggggg sloooowwww notesssss.....
I can play so fast I can bend space-time and curve around worm-holes and play Maggie In The Wood before she even reaches the first row of trees and thickets.
Ah, but true genius lies in giving great lift to a tune played slowly. At last night's session, I had every punter in the place on their feet, dancing and clapping, and the bodhranii going like madmen, everyone carrying on for 20 minutes straight till they were breathless...and I was still on just the first bow stroke on the first _note_ of Speed the Plough....
Ha!
Sally Gardens in 20.14 seconds, on guitar, playing with my false teeth (held in mouth, not in hand) and in a radiation-safety glove on my left palm.
Well, since I seem to have missed the March 31st cutoff for the Mighty Craic recording, I'm gonna have to play fast enough to go back in time to get my set sent in. At least a good 16 hours or so.
Well, instead of going for speed, I've been trying to sing all the traditional songs I know backwards, and it's amazing how it changes your outlook on history and other things. I mean, Napoleon went back to France, so the Bonny Light Horseman never wound up going to war and getting killed. And all those people emigrating from Ireland returned, so the US never became a haven for traditional Irish music, and March 17th became just another day...
I have to agree with Darragh--I too like something to eat when I'm playing. It's just too hard trying to do the tunes justice on an empty stomach. And of course stout is a meal in itself, so even a pint or two breaks the fast, eh?
Must be a World Record surely?

Re: Must be a World Record surely?
So sorry old beans - I quite forgot to mention - also got a PB for the following little ditties:
Kesh (This is a jig) 32.45 sec
Over the Moor to Maggie (A 3-part reel) 47.8 sec
Pretty good don't you think?

Re: Must be a World Record surely?
Not bad, but I can get over the moor to maggie in half a minute, if she's desperate.

That's nothing... I played "Love at the Endings" so fast that it became "End of the Lovings"

Re: Must be a World Record surely?
I play so fast I've finished before I've started, so no-one actually ever hears anything. Infinitely preferable.

The best way to play a tune is not fastly! It'll just sound horrible!

Re: Must be a World Record surely?
I've heard tunes destroyed because they were played too fast - dropped notes everywhere, it's just wrong.
