St. Patrick's Breastplate

St. Patrick's Breastplate

I haven't submitted on here for a while, but I have a question. I've been looking at the hymn "St. Patrick's Breastplate", and there is something that just doesn't seem right with the melody. According to the hymnal its out of, the melody is traditional irish. Its in g minor, and it (listen up theory buffs) includes a tonicization of c with a b natural at some point in the tune. Somehow I don't think a traditional melody would include this, so I think its either not actually traditional or its been altered with the hymnal's harmonization. Anyone have any input on this?

Re: St. Patrick's Breastplate

"tonicization" of wine, my dear chap, has been a sideline of the old monks for manys the year, Buckfast Abbey being an example in point. Natural "B's" to our misfortune have been a misfortune of the old church too! ( G. Minor, I shall see you privately in my study, now)!
