A friend of mine is going to be in Glasgow for the next week, and I figured I may as well see if she could track down a tunable high D Alba whistle for me (they appear to be increasingly difficult to find). Does anyone know if there are any shops in Glasgow that sell these whistles? Thanks in advance for any leads!
hehe, no worries. I know about the site, but it is nice to have friends bring you gifts when you live in Norway, where there is a high import tax... ;)
Do you know of any sessions in Bergen, by any chance? I'm going there next week. I asked Snorre but he stays in Oslo and doesn't know the Bergen scene too well. There's a couple of Irish pubs where I could start something myself at a quiet moment if the worst comes to the worst.
There is a shop that is maybe 100 meters away from st georges cross underground station that sells them, the owner is called kenny. It has a good range of books too, better than Biggars & McCormacks by far.
THank you Borderpiper for the link. I lived in Glasgow for three years (in Maryhill Road) walked past St Georges Cross every day and never knew this shop existed.
I notice on the website that they sell a set of Susato whistle triple pack Bb C D with single mouthpiece. My wife is a whistle player with a birthday coming up and these look like they would make a good little present. Does anyone have any experience with them, think they would be a good/bad buy etc. Any advice would be appreciated.
The owner is my pal and he can get almost anything for you on order if you are able to wait a few days also. The best folk music shop in Glasgow - actually the only one. Good selection of CDs as well and music books that nowhere else in Glasgow sells at all. Well worth a look.

No, I don't know the bergen scene either. If anyone would know, I would imagine it would be Snorre.

Instrument buying is personal preference. After studying jazz sax at Hartt and spending a year being told that I "needed" to drop $5000 on a Mark VI just because it was "the best", I concluded that you should play what sounds best to *you*. At the end of the day, you have to listen to yourself more than anyone else. I prefer Alba's, so the equation is easy!
I own that three pack of Susatos. Great whistles for sessions at a good price. I ended up buying an extra fipple because once you get the D in tune, you don't want to constantly be taking the fipple off to play the C or Bflat

The big music shops are Biggars in Sauchiehall St & McCormacks in Bath St but I don't know if they stock Alba.

Re: Buying Alba Whistles in Glasgow
You've maybe tried this already but Alba Whistles have a web site where you can buy "on-line".

Sorry, if I've stated the obvious.
