I heard this tune on 'Feet of Flames,' which is probably not the most reliable source for music, but it's a great tune and my teacher says it's trad. Sound familiar to anyone?

Big John McNeill's - originally Scottish, and in the tune database already. I got that "Feet Of Flames" CD a few months ago, knocked down to £1 . 00. There's some really appalling music on it, and yet one or two wee gems hidden in there. "Pinch Of Snuff" is hilarious.
Kenny, I don't remember "Pinch of Snuff" on Feet of Flames. The dance show, right? ;)
Zina, Mairead and Cora open "Duelling Violins" with Big John McNeill's, before going into Connaughtman's Rambles and another untitled reel. I think it's a tune Ronan Hardiman composed for the show.
hmm i know big john mcneil, and i have heard pinch of snuff , and they ain't the same tune (Someone called it Bunch of Keys - the last tune in Oneills Reel Section) ........I looked in Oneils but uh-uh ..definetly different, although it does change keys (and when you read that title didnt you yhink of : iron keys on a ring,,,,,,,not a's and g's
still cant find the written notation. However i dearly want to learn this tune..............i have looked in phillips and Brody and various other places,,,,,,,anybody got the notes?
vboyd100 - I don't understand your posting. Tell us which tune it is you're looking for, and maybe we can help. All 3 reels you mention are in the database.
thx kenny......the tune I have heard is a really odd reel that changes keys several times, ending with a run down in G. The comments that have been posted regarding Pinch of Snuff certainly match the mood of the tune. Errik (above) has posted some abc's of the music but I cant readily decipher his technique .i heard a guy play this tune a couple of weeks ago at our session, and i asked him what it was and he said "Bunch of Keys" so I looked that up in Oneils, (it's the last reel in the book), but it wasnt the tune...........so then this other guy plays it last Tuesday at the same session (meanwhile the first guy has left for europe) so i asked him and he said its called Pinch of snuff, so I tried to look that up but couldnt find it ia any books so i checked the website here, and it gives two versions. a D mixolydian and a D major, but neither are anything like the tune that either of these guys played . The first guy, Adam, (yes his name really is Adam, Im not trying to be funny) is approachable but unavailable, gone to europe as I explained. the second guy, Dan Lapp is available but a bit unapproachable...(I hope he doesnt ever read this or take my comments the wrong way, I simply mean he is such an awesome, busy musican and I don't want to labour my point by asking him again. When he platyed the tune on Tuesady i said. "oh thats the tune I have been looking for. i heard it was called the bunch of keys but i looked it up in oneils and its not the same. Where did you get that tune?" And he said. "some people call it the Pinch of snuff".........)
Usually i might just let the whole thing go, I mean there are a zillion other tunes to learn, but I am kind of on a sleuth now, and would love to get the right version. The database mentioned that The Wise Maid was another name for the Pincjh of snuff as well as Big john mcneil, //both of those tunes are common here and definetly not the elusive one i am hunting for........
i must admit I havent actually played my instrument of the posted sheetmusic, but a quick sightread has given me the impression that these posting are not what iam looking for..maybe I havent read carefully enough..........here, just let me hum the tune for you now, da da da daddadtdtad adsd d,kas adada. (just a joke.) hope you answer this and I am curious as to how you came upon my query
I see what you mean – the “big” version hasn’t been posted. I could add the abcs for the 9 part version to one of the existing “Pinch Of Snuff”s – or there may be a case for posting the whole thing as a separate tune, although I think we would need to ask Jeremy’s permission for that. I’ll try to get that for you sometime next week – unless some generous soul wants to do it first !
I’ll explain the “Feet Of Flames” discrepancy later – there are 2 CDs with the same name, and mine seems to be an “unofficial” one.
I think you'll find most of the 9 part version at http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/591.
in the comments area, the transition (9th) part is posted, and parts 7 and 8 are just 1ste and 2nd part played 1 octave higher.
maybe josh kane could just update his submitted abc?
i looked at http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/591 and yes this is the tune .. thank you so much! i am a happy person...thx kenny and mm and josh hurray what a cool website>> thx again
PS I AM WONDERING.. TO POST TUNES DO YOU HAVE to have A MACHINE THAT PICKS UP THE TUNE AS YOU PLAY IT INTO THE COMPUTER? AND does the machineTRANSCRIBE the tune AUTOMATICALLY?
ooh sorry didnt mean to press caps!
Nope -- you use ABC. It's pretty easy and fast to learn, for info, take a look at the ABC software links in the Links section of The Session. If you have problems, throw yourself upon the mercy of someone like Kenny or Will Harmon or such; if you whine pretty and blink your eyes as if to burst into tears soon (and when I first started learning ABC, I thought about that as a viable option), someone'll generally help. ;)
Pthbbblllt. That for your hanky. I've got it down now, I think. Well, maybe. I still always have to stick in into ABC Mus to play it to make sure I got it right. Heh.
It's going to be interesting to see the ABCs that vboyd100 comes up with considering he has that troublesome caps key lock thing. You'll have to be a feckin virtuoso to execute all the octave jumps.
ha ha.. Ill keep the caps under control... I have just read a tutorial in the links and will now have fun writing out the "ninth part" tag by deciphering the ABC that was posted by -- can't remeber who but if i go back now to acknowledge the poster i will lose this message into cyberspace, so I will thank him/her when i next visit here -- meanwhile, thx to all you fine folks,. ps Jack, as Zina picked up, I am a she. not a he// er.. unless she suggests that guys bat their eyes and blink, which is of course also entierely appropriate................

Big John MacNeil's
This is Big John MacNeil's, widely played in Canada and among the swing and Americana crowd in the US.
You'll find the "standard" setting here:

A great reel which the Kilfenora Céilí Band have recorded - I think it's Lord Ramsay.
