I guess you or somebody subedited my "Many happy returns" entry to remove the "The". After that I see that the "Bucks of Oranmore" shows up as a match in the tunes database. I notice now that "Miss McLeod's Reel" does not show up as a match because the word Reel is tagged on the end. Is there a way for us to go back over a submitted recording and force a match to the Tune name.. For instance this would be useful where the same tune has several names.
Hmm.. I've got the tunes set up in such a way that whoever submits the tune can always go back and edit the title, key, abc, etc. Now, doing this for the recordings would be a lot trickier because it involves so much more information. That's why you always have the confirmation step of the recording submission process; to make absolutely sure that everything is correct before submitting it.
For what it's what, Miss McLeod's does now show up as a match - I tweaked the way it checks for matches so that now a partial match also works (so "Miss McLeod's" will match "Miss McLeod's Reel" and visa-versa).
I'll see about making track listings editable, but it might not be possible.
You might be wondering why tunes and tracks that are submitted with the word "The" at the start always lose it. This is done automatically.
This is basically to make search results more sensible. If "The" was allowed at the start of tune names, then half the tunes in the database would begin with "T". As it as, if your scanning through a list of search results for, say, the bucks of Oranmore, you'll find it under the Bs instead of the Ts.
This way makes more sense to me. The only other option was to have the titles written like this:
"Bucks Of Oranmore, The"
which seems way too stilted to me. Still, if everyone thinks it would be better that way, let me know.
Jeremy,
I'm a writer and editor by trade and can relay that indexing is nearly always based on the first key word, rather than articles (such as "the," or "a"), for exactly the reason you give. I also agree that adding the article after the name is stilted. Keep doing it the way you've begun--people will adjust.

Y'know, I'm thinking there might be a way to do this "transparently".
This is what I'm thinking:
The tunes could be stored with the article at the end ("Bucks Of Oranmore, The") but when it comes time to display the name of the tune, if the last few characters of the title are ", The", then they get displayed at the *start* of the title.
This means the Bucks of Oranmore would be displayed as "The Bucks Of Oranmore" but will still appear alphabetically with the Bs because the *actual* title is "Bucks Of Oranmore, The".
I'm just thinking out loud here.
It would mean changing around a few things on the site, but it might be worth doing.
I've made some alterations behind the scenes. Here's the lowdown:
Tune titles can begin with the word "The" but they will be filed with the word "The" tacked onto the end (see my last post).
It is now possible go back and edit the track listing of any recordings you have submitted (look for a tab labeled "Edit").
There's still one issue to be addressed. What happens when "Miss McLeod's Reel" doesn't match "Miss McLeod's"?
Well, I've thought long and hard about this, and I think I'd prefer it if tunes were listed without the tune type at the end, i.e. "The Kesh" instead of "The Kesh Jig" and "Miss McLeod's" instead of "Miss McLeod's Reel". The reason for this is that when you go to the tune itself, it appears as "Tune Name (tune type)" e.g. "The Kesh (jig)" or "Miss McLeod's (reel)". I think it might look quite redundant to have "The Kesh Jig (jig)" or "Miss McLeod's Reel (reel)".
That's my opinion, anyway. But of course, the final decision lies with you whenever you decide to submit a tune or a recording.
I'm not sure if I should have started a new thread for this, but here goes: A couple of years back on the abc e-list, Steve Bliven asked if anyone could host a page of abc tunes he had transcribed from John Of The Greeny Cheshire Way. I volunteered my site, and now there are others, too, that have these tunes on the 'net. I don't have time to copy and submit them here, but if anyone would like to do that, here is the URL of the page: http://personal.myavista.com/acflynn/Cheshire.html
Regarding tune naming: there are, at least in Scottish tradition, sometimes tunes (and dances!) that call themselves one sort of tune and are in fact another. So you get jigs that are really reels, reels
that are really strathspeys, etc. It's a little odd.
This is, however, probably not really a significant enough issue to warrant changing things.
*I* know! Let's have a little button on the tune entry page that says "If your tune title contains a tune type, is it important that it be listed in its entirety?" And then we can have a little daemon sitting behind the
scenes and checking that flag and spitting out the full title for those
with the flag set. :
