Hi, I live in the Isle of Man and at the ripe old age of 46 am looking to learn the violin! Any help would be gratefully appreciated, unfortunately as I am unemployed I cannot afford lessons.

I'm a fiddle teacher on the Island, but I'm afraid I'm completely full and have a waiting list. I'm pretty sure all the other teachers are in the same position. I'd suggest going along to some sessions and trying to find someone who would be willing to help.
Also if you go to www.manxmusic.com there's a new book just out, called Fiddyl, which is a Manx fiddle tutor aimed at beginner to grade 3 level. Bargain price of £5

That's how I found my first concertina teacher. He agreed to meet up with me for 30-60 min before the session and sit down and go over a few of the basics. Then I would hang around and enjoy the session afterwards.
manxygirl, I also need a new string (was given the fiddle with spare 2,3&4 and number 1 is broken!! Where on island can I get a replacement? Many thanks in advance
2,3,&4? I guess I've never heard them called by #'s (like guitar). Which is #1, the E string?
You might ask any teachers if they have any mature students that could find time to get together with you. It's good for their students, and would be good for you. Someone that likes cake, maybe?
Nance, you could try Peter Norris, but they tend to be quite expensive for strings. I generally buy my strings online. Try www.thestringzone.co.uk but make sure that you try and buy the same make and type of strings that are already on. If you need a hand with re-stringing etc give me a shout!
The cheapest place to get strings that I know of is GoStrings in New York. If you buy more than $100 worth in one go they ship for free. They are up to 50% cheaper than many shops, and even with their current discount Stringzone are charging £5 more for a set of Dominants than GoStrings charge at regular price.
The Manx triskele ("Three-Legged-Whatever..") can only tap one foot in succession on the ground, as he / she / other bowls ceaselessly around like a hoop - or possibly like a wild haggis running round a mountain. They probably run round the TT course on dark winter nights.
The idea is - if you throw the Manx triskele into the air, it will always land on at least one foot and therefore be able to leap up pronto and carry on escaping / achieving / whatever. But I notice a lot of sports people landing on bits of their legs or feet and staying there till they are crated off to be re-assembled, so I can't quite buy that one.
