Re: Title for Mazurka needed, please

The second part sounds like it could be a French bourrée. The first part sounds like it could be a French waltz (maaaaaybe a bourrée). In general, I doubt it's intended to be a mazurka.

Or it could not be French...

Re: Title for Mazurka needed, please

If it were bourrée, it wouldn't be in 3/4 time.

Possibly a waltz - but more likely a mazurka, I believe.

Re: Title for Mazurka needed, please

I'll do some checking, but it feels more like that close cousin 'The Varsovienne'...

& yes, there is a difference, if some might say 'subtle'... ;-)

Re: Title for Mazurka needed, please

Thanks for checking in on this one, Ceol. Yes, a very similar structure to Varsovienne - and yet the melody is different.

But "out of the same stable", certainly - and as I said above, I believe it to be French.

Some thoughts from other tuneophiles would be handy - Weejie for instance?

Re: Title for Mazurka needed, please

Difficult to say where it comes from, or for exactly which dance it is intended. If you dotted and semiquavered those quavers it would be more typical of a mazurka - then again, you could tweak it to a minuet, or even a sarabande.
It does sound familiar, though. Where did you get it from?

Re: Title for Mazurka needed, please

Thanks, for your thoughts, Weejie.

Where did I get it from? From someone at one of my local sessions. Where did he get it from - I don't know. I'll ask him when I see him in a couple of weeks time!

Re: Title for Varsovienne needed ~ 8-)

Mazurkas, in general, tend to be more notey, meaning 'more notes', denser, allowing for that swing to be obvious, while varsoviennes are generally less notey, like the transcription at the top, or, at least as it has been given.

Here's what defines the 'varsovienne' in it ~ the A-part first, note the phrases ~

DG | B2 A2 G2 | B4
DG | B2 A2 G2 | A4
FG | A2 G2 F2 | A4
Bc | B2 A2 F2 | G4

& now the B-part ~

d2 | e4
e2 | d4
B2 | AB c2 A2 | B2 G2
d2 | e4
e2 | d4
B2 | AB c2 F2 | G4

As to a nationality for it? Dutch? ;-) I still haven't gone melody hunting, as certain other distractions and responsibilities have delayed that niggling curiosity...

Just for the kick, and maybe a different arrangement will draw out more memories ~

3/4 mazurkas / varsoviennes, it's easy to doctor them up either way to fit a particular dance... The varsovienne was one of the most popular couple dances going, spread all over this planet, and the usual melody associated with it, 'Shoe the Donkey', and all its other names and lyrics, I've collected versions from pretty much every continent, and a few islands too... There are some interesting variations on just that one melody. With this one, the order is reversed, meaning that the B-music correlates with the A of the usual varsovienne, and the A of this with the B of, for example, the better known melody for it, "Shoot the Donkey"...

Re: Title for Mazurka needed, please

I'm from America, so shootin' donkeys is alright, might even shoot a bull, just as long as we don't skin any mules!

Sorry, no luck yet Mix... But I did discover another tune you'd asked me about that I'd been searching for... :-D
