My teacher is an master of obscure tunes. I can usually track down recordings, spots and such.
Found one that has me stumped. It's a reel called Patsy Campbell. I have on arrangement with spots. But am looking for another to confirm and looking for a recording or recordings to get a sense of it.
Usually tunes like this are known by a different name. But I even tried Rev's tune finder no luck. Here is the first phrase
Thanks for the link, Jack!
Earlier this morning I was searching on irishtune.info & noticed a button for playing 10 seconds of a tune. Either I've never noticed it before, or it's a new feature. I suspect the latter as it wasn't working for the tune I was searching.
So, I checked out the album details & the button(s) work there as well; http://www.irishtune.info/album/RF/
Unfortunately the button does not work (yet) on the tunes I was searching earlier.
Cheers, ceolachan. You must be right, because now all the buttons are working like a charm.
I'm just glad the 10 seconds are from actual recordings. Sometimes I try listening to stupid MIDIs, but they're simply rubbish. I swear, if I was stranded on a desert island with an Android, TunePal, a solar-charger, & all the tune MIDIs in the trad-murdering universe; I'd swim home . . . against a tsunami! Hopefully the MIDIs would scare away some of the sharks.
What's obscure for some ~ is Heinz beans for others...
I was chuckling while lurking over Zip's thread here, wandering if it was a leopard hunt, and curious about who the 'master of obscure tunes' was, and why he hadn't asked them? But I didn't want to ask, just pop in and see how things developed. Besides, it was such an odd heading don't you think ~ "Obscure tune advice sought" ~ it just kind of sounds like someone wanting directions on how to change a flat, or what's the best cure for a verrucae? What kind of cream should be used on an obscure tune?
Let's approach this calmly. Before we panic, what colour are the polka dots and what's their shape and size? Are they perfectly round or are they amoebic and in a constant flux?
I think the problem is you shouldn't let your obscure tune eat polka dots - the dots themselves are fine, but the tune will be unable to digest the dots' fur, and will have to expel them messily, usually on your sofa or on the nice carpet.
I concur with Jon's diagnosis, that it's not a good idea to feed any tune too many dots, it makes them unstable and cantacerous. That's just too much starch and sugar and not enough protein. They need a diet rich in fibre and fruit too... The fibre, as most know, is good for the digestion and keeping things 'regular'...
I'll have to chase that one up for a listen. I suspect I've only got it on vinyl and have yet to replace the lovely turntable we'd given away... It went to good people...
Everyone here knows I am ecumenical about dots. Take them or leave them
When it comes to obscure tunes with few recordings if any like this one (it is certainly not the Kesh for Pete's sake) it's nice to see how someone who took the time to memorialize the tune on paper trasncribed the tune he/she/it knew.
And also if it is known by another name, it's nice to have some dots to translate to ABC so I can use the very fine Reverend's tune finder.
My motto- 'Spots...Spots...I don't need no stinkin Spots...' with apologies to Mel Brooks and the Marx Brothers!

Re: Obscure tune advice sought
Yes, it's a relatively newish feature...
Maybe you caught it on an off day?
Or you didn't catch it just right with your pointer?
