'Competitors from regions with qualifying rounds must first qualify at the regional level before competing in the championship round. In Ireland, for example, musicians must be among the prizewinners in their County and then Provincial Fleadh before heading to the final round at the All-Ireland.'
I actually live in Co. Monaghan ireland..and i play the fiddle and learnt from the musician Seamus Quinn. I just never knew how to enter. My area of monaghan is very poor. and theres few sessions. thanks for all the replys
You'll need to be a member of Comhaltas, not as far as I know for the county Fleadh, but if you get through to the provincial Fleadh I think it may be a requirement. The rules are available to download here:- http://comhaltas.ie/press_room/detail/fleadh_rules/
Best of luck
Look on the bright side, Rory. At least if you qualify out of Monaghan, you're in the Ulster Fleadh with 9 counties - I think 2 qualify from each county in each class.
If you were over the border in Leinster, you'd have 11 counties encompassing a large proportion of the population of the Republic.
Getting out of Connacht on the other hand, must be a relative doddle - only 5 counties!!
I wonder are there many competitors, living in Leinster, who might have relatives or holiday homes in Connacht, who fiddle their addresses so they can compete there? You know, like all the ones who suddenly acquire their name 'as Gaeilge' for the duration of the fleadh competitions etc.
"Getting out of Connacht on the other hand, must be a relative doddle - only 5 counties!!"
Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo. 5 very strong ITM counties.
Oops, egg on my face - Leinster has 12 counties competing
Well, according to that great organ of Knowledge, Wikipedia - in the 2011 census, Connacht had the grand total of 542,039 inhabitants. Whilst Leinster had 2,501,208 of same. That's a ratio of c. 1:5 - I rest my case!
Not that I'm particularly into CCE and the competitions they run but really logic should dictate that Leinster should send 5 competitors to the All Ireland Fleadh for every Connacht representative. Or at least there should be a weighting system of some sort. But then as we all know, CCE ain't exactly a paragon of democracy..
Yes, I've pondered it in the past when one or other of the kids were in a Leinster fleadh with 23 other competitors and figured things would be a lot handier across the Shannon.
Munster only has 6 counties but look how they performed last year. Leinster's first mention is well down. A larger population does not necessarily mean a better quality.
so, you have a few months left to get ready. make sure to read the rules and let us know if you don't understand anything about them. hope to see you in cavan!

Connacht may have fewer counties, but some of those counties are heavy hitters in trad music - Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon, Galway...

Leinster has only eleven counties? Which one are you writing off, twh?
Come on, folks, Leitrim only has a population of c. 32,000. It is a 'relative doddle' to win the county fleadh.

Re: How to enter the Fleadh in Cavan for 2012?
hey rory, the response i got from the monaghan CCE is:
"Monaghan county fleadh will take place on first weekend in June, 1 - 3, 2012."
to get more information, it'd probably be easiest to try contacting your local branch: http://comhaltas.ie/locations/detail/monaghan
so, you have a few months left to get ready. make sure to read the rules and let us know if you don't understand anything about them. hope to see you in cavan!
