I couldn't believe it today I heard of a deluxe fremont set selling for 15 thousand euros! What do top makers charge for pipes nowadays and do they increase in value as they are older or like a car as you drive it from the garage do they decrease by 10 percent?
I can believe it. If your pipes are not worth more than your car then either your pipes are not of good quality (or your car is too extravagnt/a tax fiddle).
Well, Eugene Lamb lists his full set at 5250 euros. They would do me fine.
On the other hand, you can get a good running motor for less than that.
I know which I'd rather have.
Pipes by makers such as Froment, Wooff, Williams, Kohler & Quinn, Rowsome, O'Briain will increase in price as they are quality instruments and the demand exceeds the supply. The same goes for "classic" pipes by Kenna, Coyne, Harrington,Taylor, W. Kennedy, etc.
I'm ambivalent about the cost of pipes. On one hand, it's a pain to put the money together unless you're fairly wealthy...and OTOH pipemakers need to be able to make a living. High prices also keep a lot of tossers out...but all of them, alas.
I have heard of one maker (although in fairness I think he made Northumbrian ones) who asked his customers what hourly rate they were earning and charged them the same for his time.

The bellows only blows out what it draws in, so it all depends on the air quality in the environment in which the pipes are being played.
