Old cassette recordings "Music for the Sets"

Old cassette recordings "Music for the Sets"

I am trying to track down copies of the 6 cassettes that were issued in the 1980's under the title "Music for the Sets" and wondered if anyone might have copies or know where I could buy them. I appreciate they are likely to be very scarce.

They were published by Na Piobairi Uilleann, ask them.

I might have 1 or 2 Niall - I'll have a look and get back to you, but you'd be best to try NPU first, as the Prof says above. I think RonP's wife had some or maybe all of them, because I seem to remember her using them at her set dance classes here in Aberdeen some years back.

Re: Old cassette recordings "Music for the Sets"

I think I have at least a few of them somewhere too, not digitised.

I really hate it when there's a question about one thing on a forum and people start recommending completely different things than what was asked for. And yet I am going to do it now anyway: Larry Lynch published Set Dances of Ireland, with Clare sets by Tommy McCarthy, Eamonn McGivney and Mick Tubridy and a bunch of Sliabh Luachra sets by people from over there. They're just lovely too.

Re: Old cassette recordings "Music for the Sets"

They were definitely brought out by NPU and may still be available from them if you try. If not available, I have the full set of tapes which I could probably copy if no copyright objections from NPU.
Apart from dancing, the tapes were great to listen to and I still play them from time to time. M

Re: Old cassette recordings "Music for the Sets"

I have already contacted NPU but have not had any reply. The Ecotonal blogspot, rather oddly, only seems to have the complete volume one and then a random assortment of tracks from the other cassettes. I was hoping to get complete copies of the all.

If NPU are ok with it would be great to get the copies from MBarrett.

I will be going to Henrietta St (NPU) on Mon evening for the set dancing and will check out the availability of Music for the Sets for you. M

Re: Old cassette recordings "Music for the Sets"

Hi Niall, I was at Brooks Academy set dancing in Henrietta St (NPU) last night and checked with two of the teachers, Jerry O Reilly and Mary Friel, both of whom were involved from the start there, incl. in the making of the set dancing tapes, with Terry Moylan ( the NPU Archivist) and Irene Martin. The tapes are no longer available and Jerry said that a plan (by Terry Moylan, I think) to make them available on CD didn't happen. Jerry, very kindly, had a good look and turned up a couple of the tapes, but no full set.
However, one full set on CDs was made by Terry Moylan in 1995 for use at the set dancing classes and I was given a v.v.short loan of these. There are scratches on some of these and particularly on Vol.1 "Round the House" where I had difficulty playing the first couple of tracks. Some tracks also appear to speed up and this may just be due to dirt or smudges on the CDs. I note on the sleeve that it says "Produced by Irene Martin in 1986". Irene no longer actively teaches set dancing but still attended on the Mon nights up to sometime late last year when she seriously hurt her ankle. The CD's properties say created in Jan 95 and are in CD Audio format which played no bother on Windows Media player.
