Hi there, Im in the process of setting up a new trad quartet. Two of us are Irish and two are American. Instruments are Whistles, Flutes, Fiddles, Cello and Vocals. Any catchy names, possibly in Irish for the group? Nothing vulgar please!
I think tune or song titles make good band names. I always wanted to call a band Fire At Midnight, which is actually a Jethro Tull song I very much like. Some titles to consider are: Carrikfergus, Crock of Gold, Parting Glass, Peat Fire Flame, Raglan Road, Rakish Paddy, and The Ten-penny Bit. Just check to see if the one you choose is already taken (Google the names).
' The Irish American's '
Then there's two types of music you can use on stage or CD's.
Irish Traditional or Bluegrass.
Here's an old video I once made of you Signature Tune : )
I'm going through this now with a new project, and that line above about "trust me, it's taken" is true. No matter how creative my band mate and I are trying to be, someone else has already thought of it.
Unless you really need to have a "cute" name, I think the best solution is to come up with a nonsense name that isn't in the dictionary. Just make up a short nonsense word. The only way to be unique, is to actually be unique.
Irish names can have the drawback that people may be unsure of how to pronounce it, and hesitant to make a mistake, and you kind of undermine word-of-mouth advertising. Just something to keep in mind.
Random or surreal:
Beer School
Chocolate Covered Bacon
The Jackeens
The Buckleppers
The Dogcatchers of Awesomeville
Whisht!
Bow & Arrah
Gansey Boys
This Side of the Pond
You could also explore terms of venery (archaic terms for groups of animals) such as:
Fesnyng (a group of ferrets)
Coffle (a group of asses)
I know the band is not just whistles. Still, I didn't think it was such a bad name. It was a serious suggestion on my part. My last. Hope it all works out.
The post about being careful with Irish names because people may screw up the pronunciation reminds me of a story told by the harp-playing duo Sileas (pronounced SHEE-lass). Some people thought it should be pronounced Silly-Ass.
"Or rather, Nicholas - We Need To Talk About Caoimhín..." (Joe CSS)
That would condemn it to being a Gaeltacht or at any rate Hibernian-only cult band. The mangling of the name spelt thus on the festival stages of the rest of the world really doesn't bear thinking of!
"Nah, you can't have 'Derek' - that's the name of a horse" - John Knoss.
What's wrong with the name of a horse?
Red Rum.
Shergar.
Hmm. Don't know any more. Was Tonto a horse?
You've got a quorum for the Four Horses Of The Apocalypse, but your playing would have to be in the league of The Bothy Band or Moving Hearts for the punters to take you seriously if you identified yourselves as these.
Has any band in the history of The Session EVER adopted a name suggested in these threads?
It matters not to me, I find thinking up names a gas!
A white horse walks into a bar and asks for a glass of whisky and the barman says 'Do you know we got a whisky here named after you'?
And the horse says 'What'? 'Derek'?
The need for originality seems overstated. All you really need is locally unique. The need for originality seems overstated. All you really need is locally unique. The odds of your band and some currently unknown outfit coming into namespace collision are microscopic: the odds of any particular traditional band achieving notoreity outside of their immediate environs are almost nil, and the odds of two particular ones doing so are nil squared.
But if you must be globally unique, I don't think anybody's used The Keenin' Paddys yet. And The Rakes of [Your Town Here] is always safe enough.
