Swede flying to Ireland, looking for B/C accordions.

Swede flying to Ireland, looking for B/C accordions.

Hello!

I'm a chromatic accordion player who's interested in playing the B/C box. However there aren't any for sale in Sweden (I found one C#/D, but I want to go for the B/C). Luckily I'm travelling to Ireland in April, so I thought when I'm there I'd try to find a nice one which I could have for a long time but still not pay loads of money. I thought I'd also pick up some books / dvds about playing the B/C box because there aren't any teachers in Sweden for that.

I've been browsing the web for second hand B/C accordions but I haven't had a lot of luck. Do you know any sites in Ireland like ebay or a site dedicated to accordions?

Also, when I travel, could you recommend any good accordion shops? I think I'll be in Dublin and Limerick (probably all over the place but I'm pretty sure of those two).

Any information regarding my accordion purchase is greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Ramin

I've bought from Sean Garvey in the past http://www.allaboutaccordions.com/
he seems a decent sort. Walkinstown in Dublin, a wee bit hard to find, if he's still in the same place. He had a good choice & range of instruments when I visited him.

Re: Swede flying to Ireland, looking for B/C accordions.

For books/tutors the best place in Dublin is probably Walton's on Great George's Street South - http://www.waltons.ie. They also stock some B/C accordions, but I can't comment on the brands (McBride's and Weltmeister) as I'm not an accordionist.

Séan Garvey's place isn't that hard to find. Walkinstown's on several bus routes and ten minutes' walk from the LUAS Red Line tram stops at Bluebell or Kylemore.

In Limerick there's this place - http://www.steamboatmusic.net.

Well, if you're from outside Dublin, it might present a little challenge. As he says, phone for directions and maybe get a taxi to drop you nearby and ask Sean to meet you. I seem to recall that he was down a lane or at back of a house or something like that but maybe it's more obvious now. Anyway, he's your best bet in Dublin, I think?

Hi Ramin,

There should be plenty of choice here:

Re: Swede flying to Ireland, looking for B/C accordions.

Sean is the man to see in Dublin, I would not recommend taking a taxi out to Walkinstown from the City Centre as it will probably cost at least 20 Euro but it is up to you. You may also check McNeill's on Capel St as they specialize in traditional music, I am pretty certain they'd have a box or two for sale.

Re: Swede flying to Ireland, looking for B/C accordions.

Wow I wasn't expecting quick answers like this, and not so many of them, so first of all, thank you very much.

Sean Garveys website was excellent and I think my best bet is to venture to this place you refer to as Walkinstown ;).

He seems to have a varied range of accordions tuned in B/C. I very much liked his website so I much definitely make sure I can go see him.

Waltons for books/dvds maybe, if not Sean has that too.

I liked the donedeal site, had a lot of good accordions, even some with videos to them. But seeing how I'm not familiar with the diatonic accordion, I think I need some face to face action. There seems to be so many different B/C accordions. Basses that have different systems. Buttons to remove the third in some bass chords etc.

So hopefully with Seans help I'll be able to bring home a good quality accordion that's perfect for me.

A sincere thank you to all of you! :) I love Ireland already!

p.s If you have any webpages / videos that describe / illustrate the B/C accordion somewhat I'd love to have a look before I actually come to Ireland. d.s

Steve Chambers is an option:

the shop has moved to the other end of the street but it's still all there.

Whereabouts in Sweden are you based? You could come by Copenhagen, Denmark at some point. I have a good few boxes you could try out, to see what kind of accordion you were after. I have a few for sale in B/C, but anyhow it could give you an idea of what kind of accordion you were after.

Re: Swede flying to Ireland, looking for B/C accordions.

Thank you for the additional replies. I've e-mailed Sean Garvey after browsing thoroughly through his website. The Garvey brand seems like a great accordion for me. Not too expensive but still a really decent accordion. Even free shipping to Sweden! And if there's any problem or concern I could just bring it to him when I come to Ireland in April.

I'd like to thank you all again for your replies.

If you have any recommendations (on Spotify or Youtube) for me regarding accordion players I'd love to hear it.

Re: Swede flying to Ireland, looking for B/C accordions.

Ah, Sean Garvey. He's the guy with the 5,000 mph reels, yes? :-) If I've got the right fella, remember me to him when you go. I've had some great tunes with that fella, and a gent at that. One time in a pub with him, a woman was listening and came up afterwards and said (somewhat OTT) that I was "the best fiddler she'd ever heard". "You sound just like Kevin Burke" she said. It was very much a "Hooray!" "Boo!" moment. ;-)

Are you sure it wasn't this one, Ben?

Re: Swede flying to Ireland, looking for B/C accordions.

No it wasn't him, Geoff, though I have met him as well. Now, that Sean Garvey wouldn't be charging through tunes like a mountain fire through heather. Both gentle characters, but the one you linked to there is gentler still.

Haha that's fantastic ethical blend. Even if I order I hope I can visit him when I get to Ireland, would be lots of fun! :)
