Flute teachers and fixers Dublin City? + Tin Whistle Query.

Hi there,

For some time now I've been learning tin whistle and I still have trouble doing the half-holing technique, managing it only 70% of the time, can anyone recommend any exercises to improve this skill?

Also, I'm back in Dublin now after Christmas and have in my possession a D MacMahon Milltown Malbay keyless flute (which i may well have wrecked heads here asking about it before)

It needs work on the body of it and also needs a new cork, I am told by a reliable source. I tried MacNeill's on Capel Street but they don't render service to flutes unfortunately. As such, can anyone with the knowledge recommend how I would go about getting this instrument seen to, in this part of the country?

Furthermore, once the flute is fixed, my minimal ability to play it must be fixed. Can anyone recommend a good teacher, preferably on the North Side, though retrospectively I'm obviously not fussy and would choose a quality teacher over one who happens to be a neighbour.

Many thanks in advance and a happy new year.

Tim

half holing

Don't know if I'm unique, onto something - or just plain wrong! - but I find that if I'm after C nat on a D whistle, I tend to slide the finger up to it. On the other 1/2 holes I tend to approach it from the side.

Never thought of it before - any other thoughts anyone?

Hi Tim, Half notes on the whistle (only F nat and G sharp come to mind), If the tune is not too fast I try rolling the whistle to the side between thumb and fingers until the hole is uncovered enought to make the right sound, or pressing downwards with the middle knuckle, making the finger straight can do the same thing

Re: Flute teachers and fixers Dublin City? + Tin Whistle Query.

I have been a flute player since 1993 and I also give lessons.  I have a band called The Bambir, we play rock music that has elements of folk as well.  I graduated from university in 2005 with a joint degree in music education and as a choral conductor.  I began working as a flute teacher, but for the past three years my work has been sporadic as I have been touring with my band.  I am available for private flute lessons in Dublin.  Please feel free to contact me at arik.bambir@gmail.com or at 087 351 8716.
