Tunes for 'A' whistle

Tunes for 'A' whistle

I'm really enjoying the mellow tones of my new Chieftain A whistle for playing at home, and keeping the louder D whistle for sessions. Now, this could open up a few interesting possibilities;
1; tunes that go below D are now in the range of the A whistle providing they dont have any notes higher than A, so can be played in the usual session key.
So far I've adapted my fingering to include Silver Spire, Calum's Road, Flett from Flotta and Trows of Truggles Water.

2; Tunes normally played in A, can now be played on low A alongside other musicians. Ones I can think of are Atholl Highlanders, Stool of Repentance and Handsome Young Maidens.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? thanks

Re: Tunes for 'A' whistle

Try "The Hut On Staffin Island" and, if you're not overly familiar with it, "Ashokan Farewell", both in D.

Niel Gow's Lament for his Second Wife
Lord Mayo

*Not* the Atholl Highlanders, it needs a low G off the bottom.

Re: Tunes for 'A' whistle

Sometimes I'll pick up the A whistle & see if it works to transpose a tune by ear, & usually in D. It's hit or miss, but that's the fun.
