ABC search fail

ABC search fail

Hi, I'm looking for the name of a waltz. the main part I have from memory goes something like this

X: 1
T:
L: 1/8
M: 3/4
K: G
G2 GB dB | G2 GB dB | d2 (b2 b) a | ga fg ef |
G2 GB dB | G2 GB dB | D2 F2 A2 | c2 B2 A2 |

Thanks in advance if you know the name of this tune. I was told it's a waltz and it does seem to be in 3/4.

Re: ABC search fail

I hope it's okay for me to ask a separate question about ABC files on thesession.org. When I select-and-copy the text for an ABC and then paste it into ABCNavigator I have to then edit all but the first row to get rid of a space as the first character of each line.

Any advice on how to avoid this step? Thanks and Happy New Year!

Re: ABC search fail

Apparently the default headers on this site have a space after the info field designation.
X: 1
T: Jig
etc.
If that is what you're referring to it shouldn't have any affect on the visual score. In other words you don't need to edit out those spaces. Hope that helps.

I think I see what you're talking about, dfost. I looked at one tune which has spaces, in the abc body, between the barlines & the first & last character. Then I looked at another tune which closed the ranks. It apparently depends on how the abcs are written by whoever is submitting the tune.

Re: ABC search fail

My personal opinion:

Tonic Sol-fa is one of the precusors of ABC notation. Like ABC, it was an efficient way of transmitting music; it used the everyday technology of the day (e.g. typewriters). Although the programs which translate ABC into standard notation can be, shall we say generous in that they accept many manners of input data, I personally prefer neat, readable ABC notation. Earl's notation above is perfect because I can read it at a glance and tell the tune he was looking for; when it comes to notation which looks like this:
A2/3 B1/3 c5/16 d8.5/16 |
I tend not to bother reading it at all. There is something to be said for standards. (Take all of this with a pinch of salt as I've had more than a pinch of Glendronach...)

Re: ABC search fail

I have that problem too and all you can do I think is go into the 'edit' part and get rid of the spaces

Re: ABC search fail

I think it has to do with a combination of the browser you're using, and probably the operating system of your computer.

I see the spaces when I select the text in Safari on the Mac, but they don't appear when I copy/paste the text to somewhere else. And if I use Firefox on the Mac, I don't even see the spaces to the left when I select the text.

If you're copying from Internet Explorer, it wouldn't surprise me. You might try using Firefox or Chrome, and see if you have the same issues. They're much much better web browsers anyway ;-)

Glendronach, eh? Not a bad wee dram, but I'm a Talisker man myself!

Re: ABC search fail

I'm not sure what you're talking about with the spaces. I don't have that issue. I use google Chrome and ABC explorer. hope that helps.

Re: ABC search fail

I use Google Chrome & ABCnavigator, and I don't remember ever having that problem. If there was an extra space at the start of a line it would be ignored by the program anyway. If you're having trouble, it may be that it's not a space but a non printing control character like an extra line feed.

Re: ABC search fail

I used to have that problem, but haven't had it in years. Just tried it now. No problem getting perfect cut and paste on Safari, Firefox, and Netscape. Couldn't even select text from the ABC or Comments tabs in Internet Explorer 5.2. Using Mac OS 10.6.8.
