Very different technique. Different coordination for starters. I came to the clarsach from guitar. Right hand was OK - but thumb takes bass on guitar. Two hands playing different things is different than one hand making the notes for the other. I'm trying to simplify things, but the feel is quite different.
The premises, however, looked somewhat bleak and mundane. I suppose I had expected to see the roof covered with a Last Judgement, with Frankie Gavin enthroned - burning eyes, hair white as wool, double-edged sword coming out of his mouth - bestowing the right to sit at his feet on those judged worthy of this while others are spurned and tumble into a cosmic skip full of, I suppose, reprehensible instruments and fast food leftovers.
Has anybody done this? Surely someone must have, by now.
There are some other videos of the reel, jig and hornpipe on that youtube channel if you would like to see them.
Im pretty sure no one has tried it at the fleadh but i have seen fingerpicking before .This is definitely the best use of it i ever seen though
This is not a new technique, Mirek Patek has been advocating this style for years and there are several Irish tenor banjo players who use finger style techniques to play trad music. It's about time that it was heard in a competition.
iv heard of them before but i thought this one was a bit special mike. Its definetely the best use of it i ever seen.I know this lad personally and id say he developed it from classical guitar(because he plays that too).

Re: carolan on the banjo(its worth a look!)
Barney McKenna's "Carolan's Concerto" was an early banjo rendition.

Re: carolan on the banjo(its worth a look!)
Well, it's not too often you hear the tenor banjo fingerpicked, but it's more akin to guitar technique.

Re: carolan on the banjo(its worth a look!)

That was very pleasing.

Gordon Johnston has several youtubes (look at http://banjocrazy.wordpress.com/2008/09/21/gordon-johnston-fingerstyle-irish-tenor-banjo/ to start and if you google "irish tenor banjo finger style" you can find a lot more.

I like what he did. Tenor banjo technique continues to grow both technically and artistically and this is just one example.
