It's my first Christmas in London...

It's my first Christmas in London...

I'll be staying in Stoke Newington from the 24th to the 27th. I'm a fiddle player from Glasgow. Any good and welcoming tunes happening??

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

This Tues (27th) there'll be a sesh at the Kilkenny* almost next door to south wimbledon tube station as usual (about 9.30).
It's on the northern line.
Come out of station, turn left, don't cross any roads, first building is a large food/ booze shop, next is the pub.

* aka B B King's Wig Museum

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

If you want to avoid Christmas altogether, take a short walk to Stamford Hill, where those celebrating Jesus' birthday will be a very small minority. You might, however, get caught up in Chanukkah celebrations there.

Thanks, yhaalhouse, for a more useful reply.

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

But, indeed, if you want to miss the dreadful Christian doodah, if you come to Sarf Wimbledon, leave earlier and get out at Tooting Broadway where you'll find many a Muslim and Hindu shop/ restaurant open and buzzing with only a touch of Xmas patronization. That's where I'll be on Sunday!

Hot water bottle collection...

I look forward to showing you my hot water bottle collection...

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

You take a hot water bottle collection with you into sessions? That would almost be worth the trouble of a trip to London... :-D

# Posted on December 23rd 2011 by ceolachan

Is it a full two octaves worth? And how do you play them? Is it like blowing a jug and levels of water? That must be difficult...

'You take a hot water bottle collection with you into sessions?'
I thought everyone did.

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

Actually, you can buy a suit and get your hair cut, purchase newly baked bread and cakes, sip freshly brewed coffee or play a game of pool on Stoke Newington High Street on Christmas Day as there are plenty of Turkish and Kurdish shops and cafes open.

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

You'll learn to love the winter and rain there as it's the only time the air is safely breathable...

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

Yes! But where are the London sessions from tonight to Tues night inclusive?

# Posted on December 23rd 2011 by yhaalhouse

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

If you go to that session, Jams, you will have to let me know what the (in)famous yhaalhouse is like! :-)

http://www.thesession.org/sessions/index.php/search?country_id=47&areaname=&town=London&day=Any&search=Search

I know, a lot of submissions in the 'Sessions' section here, but you could try contacting those that contributed them and they are likely to know if there are any sessions still going and where, with the opportunity to choose, as a start, those nearest where you'll be.

Best of luck with your stay, it is an amazing city, in all respects... And the instrument museums alone are well worth a visit... But good food and good people too...

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

I forgot to mention that isn't me of course, it's Danny.

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

Ceol and Yhaal, Danny's here alright.... Yhaal, are you accusing me of being a windbag? :-)
I haven't been out to a session in months so I couldn't really advise Jams. Nor have I posted much on here recently.
Although I started up the BHT session in Forest Hill/Catford several years ago I don't go there any longer - I have my reasons and I didn't enjoy it at all the last few times I went - so for that reason I couldn't suggest going there.
The Kilkenny is a good session, if a bit crowded, and would echo Yhaal's recommendation, though it's quite far from N London, esp trying to get back late at night. I'm not sure but would Tir na nOg be on this Saturday (Christmas Eve)?

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

No catheters attached to the "hot water" bottles?

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

Sat night at Tir na Nog in Garratt Lane is normally a good bet on a Sat but rules tend to be different over the Christmas period.
Best give them a call on (020) 8877 3622.
They usually know what Foxy's up to!

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

Monday 26th, being the last Monday of the month, is Unity Folk Club at the Torriano Meeting House, Torriano Avenue,( or is it Road ? ), Kentish Town. Not a session, obviously, but people will listen more intensely to you there than almost anywhere else.

Re: It's my first Christmas in London...

Thanks for the suggestions. I had a nice relaxed tune in the Faltering Fulback in Finsbury Park with Pete & Helen McGrath & Chan Reid on Christmas Eve. Very warm welcome & Pat who owns the bar offered the drinks up free when he heard the accent & spied the fiddle. Great Christmas all round.
