Hello
I just joined this discussion board because I have a question that I googled and it led me to you.
I have been doing podorhythmie (with my fiddle) for about a year now. I recently got my favorite contradance (and podo) shoes resoled, because the left one broke in half. Now the sole is rubber and much quieter. I am not sure what to do. Put metal taps on the heels? This seems like it might be too loud and tinny. Before I had them resoled, they sounded great. But I don't know what to tell the shoe repairman (who is Korean I think, with limited English) about how to make them sound like they used to.
What do others use for podorhythmie (quebecois for foot percussion)? What material are the heels of old dance shoes made of?
I believe that Jean-Francois Berthiaume puts linoleum on the soles of his shoes because that's what was on the floor of his kitchen as he was growing up. He likes that sound. He attaches small microphones right to the shoes for amplification.
Sean-nos dancers look for a similar sound. We like hard leather or a hard rubber like Neolite or Vibram. You can put a little metal heel protector on the back of the heel for more sound without too much of a tinny sound. http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Plates-Nails-Shoes-Boots/dp/B0033N7UHC
wow! thank you everyone for all these great responses!
i really appreciate it.
we play a dance on saturday (in a few days) and i don't know if i will have time to follow these leads before then. i will probably for now just try out the metal taps that the shoemaker said he could put on, and then if that doesn't sound good, pursue some of these ideas. it is great to have so many rich responses in such a short time. i am kind of blown away.
i should have waited a day for responses before going back to the shoemaker. live and learn.
you guys are great!

“Can't make this stuff up, can you?!”
One tries, as you well know M. yhaalhouse, but one is constantly eclipsed by reality.

They should have said, "Historically Accurate".
Important for hard-core re-enactors, really.
