I have a lot of recorded ITM, so I don't buy much these days, but I am particularly impressed with flute player Emer Mayock. Her "Merry Bits of Timber" recording is wonderful. She also plays uillean pipes and fiddle. Something about her style and flow just grabs me.
In a Scottish vein, I just saw the Battlefield Band, with their new members, and was very impressed. Bought the new CD, called Lineup, which was quite good, especially the instrumental stuff. If you like CDs from bands, that is a fun one.
I am very impressed by At first Light's Idir. It's quite new and would not have been around for a spring or summer wishlist.
Mainly pipes and whistles, but some great fiddling and memorable tunes. Fine singing and excellent arrangements as well.
Some of the best Cds I've bought this year are Gentle Spirit by Jonathan Wilson, Get Well Soon by Sarabeth Tucek, Bad As Me by Tom Waits, Burst Apart by The Antlers, The Rip Tide by Beirut, Let England Shake by PJ Harvey, Tassili by Tinariwen, Smoke Ring For My Halo by Kurt Vile and Slave Ambient by The War On Drugs....I'll be purchasing the new Fidil album very soon.
Bad As Me is very good. So is the Beirut record, which is a departure inasmuch as songwriting is concerned. Anything by Midlake. Sun Ra has a new box set (on the stereo right now) which is like a documentary with loads of rare tracks. Gabriel's New Blood. ITM - last year's Joe Derrane record and the Daly Cranitch record are highly recommended.
And buy practically anything by Can. My favorite is Future Days.
If you need some bits n pieces for your Christmas stockings, be sure to check out Dónal McCague's mighty new fiddle album here. It has all the ''Bits N Pieces'' you'll need. Don't miss out!
Tago Mago and Soon Over Babaluma, or pretty much anything they ever did, it's all trend setting and utterly fantastic. Even when they dabbled in disco with a weak vocallist...
Dear Santa
This year could I please have a copy of Dónal McCague's Bits 'n' Pieces? My friends have been boasting about it and i want to hear it for myself. Feel free to throw in another few too! Counting the days to see Rudolf and yourself, i'll have the carrots and whiskey ready!
Its that time........Christmas CD list!!
Its that time........Christmas CD list!!
Well, what are the suggestions for the Christmas CDs then?!
I'm afraid I'm a fiddle player, so I'm voting for fiddle CDs.
Big one for me is FIDIL - The Old Wheel of Fortune. Saw these guys a few weeks ago, they're one of the best bands out there i think!
Also, looking for The Star over the Garter, classic!
Any other suggestions?!

Re: Its that time........Christmas CD list!!
Do people only buy CDs at this time of year? Do we have a summer list or a springtime list? Maybe the curse of consumerism is the real reason.
