Celtic Woman just hit PBS in the US again, just in time for Christmas. With a $125 contribution you get CD and DVD in time for Christmas
( as a Sound Guy, the recording I heard was awful- gain over driving the feedback clipping and warbling)
But, with all due respect to Maired, Should I feign approval of this stuff because PBS/cruise boat Irish music makes the Music accessible to a broader audience...Or should I be indignant because some of the stuff and arrangements is schmaltzy tripe ;-0
Maired's 'Danny Alb's Slide' Was really pretty- though the arranger wrapped alot of other music and some key changes around it.
Maybe I can get Llig and SWFL out of hiding on this
This thread is purely for discussion... and a bit of sport
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
I figure it does make it more accessible--it has elements of the pop-type stuff that people are used to, so it's less jarringly-different than trad. Then once you're used to it, trad starts to sound a little more familiar and interesting. Just a theory.
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
I don't know what Celtic Woman is, I don't know who Maired is, I don't know what PBS is. I don't care about a broader audience, and I don't care if somebody I have never heard of makes schmaltzy arrangements.
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
It's musical Turkish Delight. No-one but no-one can survive its ingestion for any length of time without feeling violently ill. The crew of the Marie Celeste were probably driven into jumping ship by having a sound system that played the Celtic Women over and over again and couldn't be stopped.
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
Its easy, if you don't like it, don't listen to it. There is no need for a debate, just deploy your personal censor and turn it off.
Speaking for myself, I'd sooner listen to this sort of thing than a whole host of other stuff.
There is much more to "trad" than pub sessions - some of it good, some of it not so good.
"You pays your money and takes your choice."
As I have said before, we should all encourage diversity, but we don't all have to like all of the end results. If some people do like it, what gives us the right to disrespect their personal choice? at the end of the day, other peoples preferences are just as valid as our own.
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
Ormepipes and TSS, right on. I have a dear friend who loves this stuff, and I really don't care. (She is also a better fiddle player than I will ever be, so I take that as the cosmos' comment on my supposedly refined tastes.)
Since we have resurrected this thread one more time, I will see your zombie and raise you with "what did you hear that got you interested in traditional music?"
I came in through the Schmaltzy Tripe door by way of the Fairport Convention Alley. That's like posting a drunken picture on Facebook (passed out on the floor with undergarments on full display).
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
Okay, I'll fess up too. It was The Unicorn Song by the Irish Rovers. Then someone told me about the Flanagan Brothers and from there I learned about the Clancy Brothers, then the Dubliners and etc....
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
I totally agree with whidder and a lot of others here ,if it floats yer boat ,
and it does for some then why not,i mean ive been playing
the riverdance stuff from the bill whelan \ivan goff
book and cd ,and im not ashamed to admit it ,im really into it ,
and i consider myself to be a trad player ,
but i know most people on this site consider it as being in the
same vein as celtic women ,but each to his own i say,
and if broadens the horizons of trad music
(which im sure it does) then whats wrong with that
Anyway it most be pretty good cause your all talking about it
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
Don't get me wrong. The grrls are scrumptious and their playing soars over mine. It's just the gloop it is all served up in, no doubt including various melodic lobotomies like the 'Titanic' theme.
You mean like a cat, or a hunter after a trophy? Where did I leave my rat traps. Definitely not PC. But that's real sport, blood sports. Mind you, if we could get a crate of these when they don't sell they might work for a bit of skeet or trap shooting? Somehow, in my demented mind, even the idea of putting something like this in our CD player bring to mind a child feeding it a peanut butter sandwich. I'd rather the sandwich...
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
Come to think of it, speaking of kitsch, just yesterday, I sang an old "authentic" Irish song, Christmas in Killarney, in a Christmas show. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmoPOUrS-w0
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
This is another example of Lawrence Welk syndrome. The older people get, the better he sounds! Kind of like when grandpa begins to prefer early hour at the cafeteria. I went to a live performance, because my 81 year old mother loves them. The majority of the sold out house was over 60. The others were either their kids (who drove them) and the grandkids.
People want someplace to go with their young(and old) ones without being embarassed or shocked by nearly naked pop stars with profanity laced lyrics. This is a nice clean show with pretty songs sung by pretty girls in nice dresses. They aimed at a very large and untapped market and they scored a bullseye. I don't blame them for being smart.
Re: They'rrrrre Back- Lets do this discussion again
I'm with you Al. I just try not to look when herself is around
Have no way of validating this, but I have heard that Maired Nesbitt plays sessions occasionally. I have talked about my play and having to hold on for dear life when the high performance fiddlers get on a roll. She must play a step or two above that.

That'll be Mary Celeste, nicholas. It is the same publicity machine that corrupts whatever it touches.

Marie Céleste in the UK. We don't care what the original name was.

Who cares? That's my attitude. Though if it inspires someone to give 125 bucks to PBS I'm not going to complain, as they do a lot of good stuff.

All right, Michele, I will match you by admitting that when I was starting the tin whistle, one of the tunes I learned was the theme from Titanic!
