Lasairfhíona Ní Chonaola - Bean Pháidín

Lasairfhíona Ní Chonaola - Bean Pháidín

Well, for my 4th Irish CD i decided to get a mix of bands and artists instead of a single groups as i've done before. I found "The Rough Guide to Irish Music". After checking out the names on the back, i figured it was pretty Legit.

Great stuff on it but one song caught my attention. The way she sings it is so calm and laid back. Very tame as if she was having a quiet conversation with herself. It being in The Language was nice too. I like how she sang it, a lot. But then I thought... "Hmmm, why is a woman singing about another man's wife? Eh, maybe it's just one of those folk songs that anyone would sing."

So of course, I get curious and look up the translation. Well, i can't say that I was short of surprised, and slightly creeped out... I mean really, how could someone so casually sing curses(me thinking that that is how the original artist would've sang it.)

But aside from that, I still really really like the song and wanted to know if anyone knew of any songs with similar melodic structures. Or maybe songs similar to this where I don't have to sing about becoming a mans wife :P

For those that haven't heard it

Cúnla would be an appropiate b-side to Bean Pháidín...Then there's the triumvirate of An Rógaire Dubh, Na Ceannabhain Bhana and Cailleach An Airgid, which are often played as a set of tunes as well. (And then there's ..well...countless others). Just be aware that Lasairfhíona's understated delivery would not be broadly representative of the singing tradition in Irish...But a delight nonetheless!
